Posted: 04 Apr 2022 09:34 PM PDT

Nashik (Maharashtra): Referring to the usage of loudspeakers at religious places, Nashik Police on Monday warned to take strict action against those who tried to take law into their own hands and disturb the city’s peace.

The development came after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Saturday had warned to play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers outside mosques if the loudspeakers for Azaan in the mosques are not removed.

Later, MNS leader Mahendra Bhanushali, who was accused of setting up a loudspeaker, was taken into police custody after playing ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ without permission from the authorities concerned.

Fuel Prices Hiked Again; Petrol Up By Rs 9.20 In 13 Revisions

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 09:23 PM PDT

New Delhi [India]: With the thirteenth revision in the fuel prices in fifteen days, petrol and diesel rates have gone up by 80 paise each on Tuesday. With this, the total increase in Petrol is up by Rs 9.20 per litre.

Petrol and diesel in Delhi now cost Rs 104.61 and Rs 95.87 per litre respectively. While in Mumbai, petrol cost Rs 119.67 per litre after an increase of 84 paise and diesel at Rs 103.92, increased by 85 paise.

Notably, the price of CNG was increased by Rs 2.5 per kg yesterday. With the new price, CNG costs Rs 64.11 per Kg in the national capital.

The increase in prices has also created a political uproar as the Opposition has been staging protests and demanding a decrease in fuel prices.

The Rajya Sabha was on Monday adjourned for the day following repeated disruptions over rising prices of petroleum products and essential commodities with the Opposition protesting on the issue as their demand to hold a discussion on the matter was rejected.

DMK member Tiruchi Siva had raised a point of order, asking “why the notices given by us under Rule 267 to the Secretary-General to suspend all business of the House and conduct a discussion on hiking oil prices and many other notices were rejected”.

There had been a pause in the revision of fuel prices since November 4 last year, which ended on March 22, following the crude oil prices going upwards in the wake of the Russian military operations in Ukraine.
Prices are set to be raised further given the sharp jump in crude oil prices in the international markets. It will have a cascading impact on the prices of other items and lead to inflationary pressure and hurt growth while also impacting the prices of other items.
Meanwhile, Congress is holding a nationwide protest campaign ‘Mehngai Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ against price rises under which it is organising rallies and marches across the country from March 31 to April 7.
Notably, on November 3 last year, the Centre had cut excise duty by Rs 5 per litre on petrol and Rs 10 per litre on diesel to bring down the retail prices across the country.
Following this, several state governments had reduced Value-Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to provide relief to people.

Ready To Hand Over Govt. To Party With Majority, Won’t Resign: Sri Lankan President

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 09:05 PM PDT

Colombo [Sri Lanka]: Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Tuesday informed senior party members that he will not step down as Sri Lankan President but is ready to hand over the government to whichever party proves that it has a majority of 113 seats in Parliament.

According to Daily Mirror, Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa held political meetings on Monday even as public protests continued against shortages of essential goods and electricity power cuts.

Parliament is scheduled to convene for the first time today, since the public protests and with Speaker, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena presiding to conduct a vote to determine which party holds the absolute majority of 113 seats in the 225-member assembly.

On Sunday, 26 Sri Lankan Cabinet Ministers resigned en masse from their positions amid rising public anger against the government over the economic crisis. Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa invited opposition parties to join the cabinet and form a unity government to tackle the crisis.

Daily Mirror newspaper reported that with the exit of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and some government MPs threatening to sit independent, the government has lost its two-third majority.

The SLPP is however, now trying to hold on to its 113 seats so that it could continue in government even with a simple majority and Mahinda Rajapaksa could continue as the Prime Minister.

If the government fails to show its numbers today then a proposal will be made to the Speaker to call for a debate to decide on the new Prime Minister and as Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa has decided, the government will be handed over to the new party, Daily Mirror reported.

The country’s government on Saturday blocked access to social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube, but lifted the ban on Sunday afternoon after the PM’s son Namal Rajapaksa spoke against it.

Its Jungle Raj In Punjab, There Is No Law And Order: Sidhu

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 08:54 PM PDT

Ludhiana (Punjab): Former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party government over the law and order situation in the state and said that it is a “jungle raj”, adding that there should be no other priority than law and order and peace in the state.

He arrived in Ludhiana to console the family in connection with the alleged murder of a Congress worker. Speaking to the reporters here, Sidhu said, “I have never seen such anarchy in Punjab. No one is afraid of law and order. It’s jungle raj. Cold-blooded murders are being committed in broad daylight. There should be no priority other than law and order and peace in the state.”

Taking a dig at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann who held a roadshow recently with party supremo Arvind Kejriwal in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad and had visited Sabarmati Ashram, the former Congress state president said that those answerable to people are spinning ‘charkha’ in Gujarat.

“There are attacks on the people of Punjab every day. Four people were murdered in Gurdaspur. There was murder in Ludhiana as well, incidents are taking place all over the state.

Law and order situation is in a bad state while those answerable to people are spinning ‘Charkha’ in Gujarat. The right to life is more important than the guarantees,” Sidhu said.

Meanwhile, Sidhu on Friday had called out the Aam Admi Party to take a look at a purported video where a Congress worker was allegedly brutally beaten in Patiala’s Sanaur in Punjab.

“Kejriwal, your people are going to court in Delhi that your life is in danger, should you worry about the lives of Punjabis too? If it happens in Delhi you call it Vandalism. Look what is happening in Punjab… Another Congress worker was brutally beaten in Sanaur. Law & order at a very low ebb !!” tweeted Sidhu.

Russia-Ukraine War: Facebook, Instagram Unblock Hashtags To Bucha Killings

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 08:47 PM PDT

Washington [US]: Meta-owned Facebook app and Instagram on Monday unblocked hashtags for Bucha killings, outside Kyiv in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

The social media site had briefly blocked the hashtags owing to its automated system of blocking violent content.

Meta spokesman Andy Stone said automated systems that scan for violent imagery on Facebook and Instagram, which the company also owns, were responsible for blocking hashtags including #bucha and #buchamassacre.

“This happened automatically because of the graphic content people posted using these hashtags. When we were made aware of the issue yesterday, we acted quickly to unblock the hashtags,” he wrote on Twitter.

The Bucha killings have drawn pledges of further sanctions against Moscow from the West. However, Russia denied to the killings and said that it was Ukrainian propaganda.

New satellite images from Maxar Technologies show the bodies of dead civilians in Bucha had been laying in the street for weeks, including when the town was under Russian control.

The New York Times first published the images on Monday.

A disturbing video showing the bodies in Bucha was geolocated, authenticated and reported on by CNN on Friday. It came to light the same day Ukraine declared the town liberated from Russian troops.

In response to the footage of Bucha on Saturday, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed the video was “fake” and “staged.” It said the video, photos, and allegations of war crimes were “another provocation.”

“During the time the settlement was under the control of the Russian armed forces, not a single local resident suffered from any violent actions,” the ministry said.

Climate Disaster On the Anvil, Time Running Out: UN Chief

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 08:40 PM PDT

New York [US]: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday warned that time is running out for countries, corporations and others to adopt critical measures to reverse greenhouse gas emissions, but the crisis can be averted primarily by substituting renewable energy sources for fossil fuels. He said Time is running out and climate disaster is on the anvil.

He made these remarks in response to the sixth UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report issued on Monday. “The jury has reached a verdict. And it is damning,” Guterres said in a statement. “This report … is a litany of broken climate promises. It is a file of shame, cataloguing the empty pledges that put us firmly on track towards an un-liveable world. We are on a fast track to climate disaster.”

Echoing the conclusions of the panel, Guterres said that inaction would result in major cities finding themselves underwater and the world experiencing “unprecedented heatwaves, terrifying storms, widespread water shortages and the extinction of a million species of plants and animals.”

Climate scientists and other experts on the panel said if the world does not strengthen its policies toward renewable energy, global warming could easily surpass the 1.5 degree centigrade level that the world needs to not overheat and roll as high as 3 degrees by the end of the century. If it does that would lead to climate disaster.

Politics over-reliance on fossil fuels and the costs to transition away from fossil fuels appear to be the biggest reasons why countries are reluctant or resistant to begin that move toward low-carbon economies, according to the panel.

“Every year that you let pass without going for these urgent emissions reductions makes it more and more difficult,” the panel Chair Jim Skea said. “Unless we really do it immediately, it will not be possible to limit warming to 1.5 degrees. Every fraction of a degree matters. Even if we go beyond 1.5, that doesn’t mean we throw up our hands and despair.” But the Climate disaster needs to be averted.

In an op-ed article penned for the Washington Post, Guterres described the latest IPCC report as “a litany of broken climate promises”, which revealed a “yawning gap between climate pledges, and reality.”

WHO chief wrote that high-emitting governments and corporations “are adding fuel to the flames by continuing to invest in climate-choking industries. Scientists warn that we are already perilously close to tipping points that could lead to cascading and irreversible climate effects.”

An increasing share of emissions can be attributed to towns and cities, the report’s authors stated, adding just as worryingly, that emissions reductions clawed back in the last decade or so “have been less than emissions increases, from rising global activity levels in industry, energy supply, transport, agriculture and buildings”.

Striking a more positive note – and insisting that it is still possible to halve emissions by 2030 – the IPCC urged governments to ramp up action to curb emissions.

The UN body also welcomed the significant decrease in the cost of renewable energy sources since 2010, by as much as 85 per cent for solar and wind energy, and batteries.

“We are at a crossroads. The decisions we make now can secure a liveable future,” said IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee. “I am encouraged by climate action being taken in many countries. There are policies, regulations and market instruments that are proving effective. If these are scaled up and applied more widely and equitably, they can support deep emissions reductions and stimulate innovation.”

To limit global warming to around 1.5C (2.7°F), the IPCC report insisted that global greenhouse gas emissions would have to peak “before 2025 at the latest, and be reduced by 43 per cent by 2030”.

IPL 2022: Kane Williamson Lauds His Team For Good Powerplay Bowling After Defeat Against LSG

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 08:23 PM PDT

Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson praised his bowlers for good powerplay bowling against Lucknow Super Giants after facing defeat by 12 runs here at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy on Monday.

Avesh Khan’s four-wicket haul and KL Rahul’s knock of 68 runs helped Lucknow Super Giants in defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 12 runs. Earlier KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda played knocks of 68 and 51 runs and helped Lucknow Super Giants to reach 169/7. For SRH, Washington Sundar, Romario Shepherd, and T Natarajan scalped two wickets each. “Much better performance from the last outing. Our powerplay bowling was good with three wickets. If only we could break the next partnership but credit to Deepak Hooda and KL Rahul. That was the difference to take them to 170. There were glimpses where we put ourselves in positions to get over the line with the bat but wasn’t good enough. It was a good surface. We knew if we can get some good partnerships, there was enough power in the hut,” said Kane Williamson in a post-match presentation.

“We’ll reflect on the small margins and look at the positives. I think the guys with the bowling roles were good. Some key death overs from us too. They were arguably wanting a few more runs as well. A few ones and a few twos and the chase would’ve taken a different shape. The game is a game of small margins but we don’t want to get too far ahead and try to look back on those good bits,” he added.

Needing 33 runs in 18 balls, SRH’s Nicholas Pooran started off with a 6 on the very first ball of Avesh. But the Lucknow pacer did not lose hope and dismissed Pooran with 143 runs on the board. In the very next delivery, he dismissed Abdul Samad, without letting him score a single run.

Washington Sundar stood as the last hope of SRH but his reign also ended when Jason Holder struck him, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Romario Shepherd in the last over and provided LSG with a victory by 12 runs.

Our Responsibility To Keep Country United, Maharashtra Minister Nitin Raut On Raj Thackeray’s Comment On Loudspeakers At Mosques

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 08:09 PM PDT

Maharashtra Energy Minister and Congress leader Nitin Raut reacting to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s comment to remove loudspeakers from mosques said it is “our responsibility to keep the country united.”

“India is a country of different languages, religions and cultures, it is our responsibility to keep the country united. It is really sad that people are giving such statements about religion, it shows their mentality,” Raut said here on Monday. Raut’s remarks follow Thackeray’s call last week for the removal of mosque loudspeakers.

The MNS leader had also given a stern warning to the Maharashtra government to play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers outside the mosque if the mosques do not remove loudspeakers for Azaan.

Shiv Sena had also come down heavily on the MNS leader’s remarks. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut on Sunday said that the law of the land prevails in Maharashtra and the Home Minister will do everything as per the law.

“Raj Thackeray was talking about taking down the loudspeakers installed in mosques yesterday. First, see in which all BJP ruled states Azaan has been stopped, loudspeakers removed from mosques…This is Maharashtra, where law of the land is followed,” Raut had told media persons in Mumbai on Sunday.

Not in India’s Interest To Increase Russian Energy Imports: US

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 07:40 PM PDT

The United States believes that it’s not in India’s interest to increase Russian energy imports and other commodities, said White House Press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday as Washington continues to mount pressure on countries around the world to shun cheaper Russian oil.

Responding to a question on India’s import of Russian oil, Psaki said the US expects every country around the world should abide by the sanctions that we announced on Russia. “Energy payments are not sanctioned. That’s a decision made by each individual country, and we’ve been very clear that each country is going to make their own choices even as we have made the decision and other countries have made the decision to ban energy imports,” Psaki said at a press briefing.

This comes a few days after US Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) for International Economics Daleep Singh, paid a two-day visit to India from March 30-31. During his visit, US Deputy NSA had consulted with Indian counterparts on the goals and mechanisms of US sanctions imposed on Russia.

Speaking on Daleep Singh’s recent visit to India, Psaki said that Deputy NSA conveyed a message that it is not in India’s interest to accelerate or increase imports of Russian energy and other commodities.

“What Daleep did make clear to his counterparts during this visit, was that we don’t believe it’s in India’s interest to accelerate or increase imports of Russian energy and other commodities,” she said.

White House Press secretary also noted that India’s imports of Russian energy represent only 1 per cent to 2 per cent of their total energy imports.

“So while he explained both the mechanisms for sanctions and reiterated that any country or entity should be abiding by those. We also made clear that we’d be happy to be a partner in reducing their reliance or even their small percentage of reliance on that,” she said.

India has defended its right to secure better deals for its energy needs. New Delhi has pointed out Europe’s growing purchases of petroleum products from Moscow despite the Ukraine war.

Last week, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said the European countries remain the biggest buyers of oil and gas from Russia. He even slammed a “campaign” against India for buying Russian oil at discounts.

No-Confidence Motion Cannot Be Rejected: Pakistan Chief Justice

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 07:33 PM PDT

The Supreme Court of Pakistan adjourned Monday without ruling on the dissolution of parliament that has led to the ongoing political and constitutional crisis in the country.

A five-member bench resumed hearing on the case filed a day earlier when the Pakistani lawmakers were prevented from voting on the no-trust motion. Pakistan Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that even if the speaker of the National Assembly cites Article 5 of the Constitution, the no-confidence motion cannot be rejected.

“Does the speaker not have any option to reject the no-trust motion? Are you saying that the speaker dishonestly rejected the no-confidence motion?” Bandial was quoted as saying by The News International newspaper.

Pakistan Justice Chief made the remarks while hearing the suo moto case related to the prevailing crisis in the country.

“The speaker cannot reject the no-confidence motion even if he refers to Article 5 of the constitution,” he said.

Justice Bandial further added that his fellow judges had expressed concern over the constitutional crisis the country was facing.

On Sunday, Pakistani President Arif Alvi dissolved the Pakistani parliament following Khan’s advice. Imran Khan made the proposal minutes after parliament’s deputy speaker rejected a motion of no confidence in him as “unconstitutional.”

The decision to cancel the no-confidence vote angered opposition parties, who said they would appeal the decision in court. Pakistani Information Minister Fawad Hussain had said a snap parliamentary election will be held within 90 days.

Pakistan media has criticised the dissolution of the National Assembly in the country, saying that whatever happened on Sunday violated all rules governing proceedings in the House, particularly those dealing with the motion of no-confidence.

In an editorial published on Monday, the Dawn newspaper said that Imran Khan could have played the political game like a true sportsperson and still emerged stronger from the loss given the sharp narrative he had spun leading up to the vote.

Russia Revising War Aims, Will Focus On Donbas Region, Says US

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 07:26 PM PDT

Russia is revising its war aims and will redeploy forces from Northern Ukraine to the region around the Donbas in eastern Ukraine, rather than target most of the territory, said US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan.

Speaking at a White House press briefing, NSA Sullivan said Russian forces will retreat from Kyiv to Belarus, with the plan to deploy dozens of additional battalion tactical troops, constituting tens of thousands of soldiers to the front line in Ukraine’s east. “At this juncture, we believe that Russia is revising its war aims. Russia is repositioning its forces to concentrate its offensive operations in the Eastern and parts of Southern Ukraine, rather than target most of the territory,” Sullivan told reporters at the White House.

“All indications are that Russia will seek to surround and overwhelm Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine. We anticipate that Russian commanders are now executing the redeployment from Northern Ukraine to the region around the Donbas in eastern Ukraine,” he added.

At the White House presser, Sullivan said the US assess that Russia will focus on defeating Ukrainian forces in broader Luhansk and Donetsk provinces which encompasses significantly more territory than Russian proxies already controlled before the new invasion began in late February.

“Russia could then use any tactical successes that it achieves to propagate a narrative of progress and mask or try to discount or downplay prior military failures. In order to protect any territory, it ceases in the east, we expect Russia could potentially extend its forces projection and presence even deeper into Ukraine,” he said.

Jake Sullivan said that images from Bucha, of the “atrocities” committed by Russia against Ukrainian civilians, underscore that “now is not the time for complacency.”

“The images from Bucha so powerfully reinforce now is not the time for complacency. The Ukrainians are defending their homeland courageously, and the United States will continue to back them with military assistance, humanitarian aid and economic support,” Sullivan said.

The US will announce new sanctions against Russia this week, he added.

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 07:03 PM PDT

Avesh Khan’s four-wicket haul and KL Rahul’s knock of 68 runs helped Lucknow Super Giants in defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 12 runs, here at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy Mumbai on Monday.

Apart from Avesh, Jason Holder and Krunal Pandya scalped three and two wickets, respectively to provide their side with their second win of the tournament. Chasing 170, SRH had a slow start as Avesh dismissed their skipper Kane Williamson in the fourth over with just 25 runs on the board. Avesh then sent back Abhishek Sharma who had scored only 13 runs.

Rahul Tripathi then came to the crease with Aiden Markram and provided a momentum to SRH. Markram then got caught by KL Rahul on Krunal Pandya’s delivery, with the team’s total at 82/3 in 11 overs.

Tripathi was then joined by Nicholas Pooran, who then played a stitched a brief partnership and kept the hopes alive for SRH. Their happiness was short-lived as Tripathi was sent back by Krunal Pandya after scoring 44 runs.
