| Hanuman Chalisa Row: Bombay HC Refuses To Quash FIR Against MP Navneet Rana, Husband Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:31 AM PDT The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed a petition moved by Lok Sabha MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana for quashing the FIR registered against them for allegedly assaulting the police officer who came to arrest the couple. The police took the action against the couple after they threatened to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence in Mumbai. While reprimanding the petitioners, the court said, “Those persons who are in public life must behave as responsible as it is said to power comes with responsibility.” “The state government is justified in the apprehension that it could create a law and order problem,” stated the court. “Those who are active in public life are expected to act responsibly is not an extra thing but basically an expectation which must be followed,” as per the court. Earlier on Sunday, the MP-MLA couple was arrested in Mumbai. Currently, MLA Ravi Rana is lodged in Taloja Jail and MP Naveneet Rana is lodged in Byculla Jail. “A case is registered at Khar Police against MLA Shri Ravi Rana and MP Smt Navneet Kaur Rana under sections 153(A), 34, IPC r/w 37(1) 135 Bombay police act,” stated an official release by the police. On Sunday they were sent to judicial custody for 14-days by a Metropolitan Magistrate court in Bandra. On Saturday, a row started when MP Navneet Rana and her husband stated that the couple plans to chant Hanuman Chalisa outside ‘Matoshree’ (Maharashtra CM’s Mumbai Residence), after which a huge crowd gathered outside the residence of the political couple waving flags with an aim to prevent them from reaching the Chief Minister’s residence. The Ranas withdrew their plan to chant Hanuman Chalisa amid the protests from Shiv Sainiks that culminated in their arrest on the charge of creating enmity between different groups. |

| Amid Shortages Railways Deploy Additional Rakes To Transport Coal To Power Plants Posted: 25 Apr 2022 04:33 AM PDT Amid coal shortages reported in the country, the Indian Railways said on Monday it has deployed additional rakes to transport coal to power plants. To ensure a swift supply of coal across power plants, additional trains and rakes by Indian Railways have been initiated to augment the transportation of coal through its network, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement. Indian Railways has ramped up the coal transportation resulting in 32 per cent more coal freight loading between September 2021 and March 2022. There has also been an increase in 10 per cent freight, by efficiently mobilizing resources after April 2022, the ministry said. During the year 2021-22 Indian Railways augmented the transportation of Coal through Railways by a record 111 million tonnes and loaded a record 653 million tonnes of coal as compared to 542 million tonnes in the previous year, registering a growth of 20.4 per cent. During September 2021 to March 2022 period, the loading of coal to the power sector was augmented by 32 per cent. In April 2022, Indian Railways has taken many steps to prioritize the loading of coal to the power sector which has led to an increase in the supply of coal by more than 10 per cent within one week time. The Indian Railways has taken a number of measures in the last one year to ramp up transportation of coal to power plants. The movement of Coal trains has been prioritized and each train is being intensively monitored during the entire cycle from loading to movement and finally unloading. Through this prioritization and monitoring, the transit time of coal trains to long-distance power plants has been reduced significantly by 12-36 per cent. Indian Railways has prioritized the movement of coal to long-distance power plants as well which is reflected in the fact that the average lead of coal trains has increased by 7 per cent in the last 5 days as compared to the average leads of 1st to 10th April. Despite this increase in the average lead of coal trains the time taken between two successive loading of the same rake for these stocks has been reduced by 10 per cent. With these operational innovations, Indian Railways has augmented the supply of coal trains to power plants as well as has loaded more coal rakes on a sustained basis, the Ministry of Railways said. |

The big revelation was made by Kangana during one of the latest episodes of her reality show ‘Lock Upp’. Recalling being inappropriately touched by a boy in her town, she said, “So many kids go through this (Sexual assault) every year but we avoid talking about it on public platforms. All of us go through this, all of us have been inappropriately touched at some point. I have faced this. I was a child and a young boy from our town used to inappropriately touch me. At the time, I did not know what it meant, no matter how protective your family is, all kids go through this.” “Another point is that you are made to feel guilty for it. This is a huge crisis for kids in our society. To tell them the difference between good and bad touch may not be enough. It becomes such a huge crisis. Kids are psychologically traumatised and scarred for life. They face endless troubles in life. This guy was three to four years elder than me, perhaps he was exploring his sexuality. He would call us, get us all to strip and check us. We would not understand it at the time,” Kangana added. He along with Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray held a presser after the all-party meeting called by the MVA government on Monday to discuss the law and order situation in the state which was skipped by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Walse-Patil said, “Central government should make rules regarding loudspeakers at the national level, then the problem arising in the states will not take place.” He said that the all party meeting discussed that delegation of all-party parties should meet the Centre. He also mentioned that it is the responsibility of the government to maintain law and order, if anyone violates the law, then the police will take strict action against them. “The meeting was held over noise pollution norms and law and order situation in the state. This is not only a matter of a temple or a mosque but of all the places wherever there are loudspeakers, ” Thackeray said. | China Resorts To Internet Blockade As COVID Cases Spike Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:14 AM PDT A Chinese political commentator on Youtube has said that there is an internet blockade and heavy lockdown of the Fudan University campus, Shanghai. He said that recently when Fudan professor and CCP member Zhang Weiwei expressed his support for the authorities’ extreme lockdown and zero-covid policy, even advocating the Chinese model against the European and American models he was beaten by a young professor at Fudan University. Weibo also has many such speculative posts which are based on a Wechat screenshot. But there is no concrete proof, picture or video of the incident yet. Although a few other political commentators have also talked about this happening, Fudan Uni Weibo account has refuted them as mere rumours. Non-mainstream HK media reported that students at Fudan University have been expressing their dissatisfaction, and the clues could be seen in the last week. Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Fudan University, and East China Normal University notified the quasi-closed management or closed management, requiring everyone to stay at home. It is also believed that Zhongnanhai is closely paying attention to the universities of Shanghai as well so as to not let students’ dissatisfaction escalate. A video has been shared in telegram groups and on Twitter saying that the people confronting the police are students of Shanghai but its authenticity cant be verified. He points out that till now Xi has taken action against four key men of Wang Qishan. The first one was Jiang Chaoliang, who was demoted from the post of party secretary of Hubei to chairman of the Hubei People’s Congress. The second was businessman Ren Zhiqiang who was sentenced to jail for anti-Xi remarks. The third was Dong Hong who was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. And now it is Tian Huiyu. He also pointed out that when Xi Jinping’s men were found to have been involved in corruption, only a few were brought to justice like Zhou Jiangyong, Secretary of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee. Most of them are only demoted or benched like Ying Yong was made vice-chairman of the 13th National People’s Congress Constitution and Law Committee after serving as a party secretary of a province (Hubei). Like Xu Liyi, Secretary of the Zhengzhou municipal Party Committee, and Wang Yongkang, the vice governor of Heilongjiang, which had clear cases of corruption but weren’t investigated. He also believes that “now Xi Jinping, Wang Huning and their gang” are governing the country according to their whims and fancies. He cites the example of Wang Xiaohui, recently made secretary of the Sichuan Party Committee who had no experience in local government at all. He has been in the Central Propaganda Department all his life but just because he was under Wang Huning, and is deeply influenced by Wang Huning, he was suddenly transferred to Sichuan Province to be the party secretary. Sichuan Province is a big province. The above-mentioned change in leadership in Sichuan was the second batch of provincial party secretaries replaced by top Chinese officials in less than a month. |
| Sri Lankan President Says He’s Willing To Form Interim Government To Resolve Economic Crisis Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:01 AM PDT Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday said that he is willing to take immediate steps to form an interim government to curb and resolve the ongoing economic crisis in the country. He conveyed this message to the Mahanayake of the three Chapters who are high-ranking Buddhist monks overseeing and regulating the Buddhist clergy in Theravada Buddhist countries, reported Daily Mirror. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka has slipped into a dire economic crisis due to debt troubles, liquidity problems, and minimum foreign reserves leading to long power outages, and scarcity of fuel impacting manufacturing industries and the middle class. A series of protests can also be witnessed in the country as the citizens demand the resignation of Gotabya Rajapaksa for his inability to control the situation. The Sri Lanka President has also agreed to present a new Constitution if the Parliament approves of it, Daily Mirror reported citing Ven. Medagama Dhammananda Thera, the Chief Registrar of the Asgiri Chapter. Earlier, Mahanayaka Theras had urged the President, Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and other parliament members to take necessary action to bring order to the country. He added that failure to do so will force the Mahanayaka Theras to issue a Sangha Convention. The Mahanayaka Theras of Asgiri, Malwathu, Ramanya, and Amarapura chapters issued a statement insisting on the appointment of a multi-party Cabinet, by repealing the 20th Amendment, which removed checks and balances between the legislature and the executive and to refrain from suppressing mass protests, Daily Mirror reported. Earlier, Sri Lanka Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa asserted that if an interim government is formed, it should be led by him only. Due to energy shortages, some parts of Sri Lanka have rolled blackouts while the country’s foreign debt is estimated at USD 51 billion. |
| After US, India 2nd Country To Launch Trade And Technology Council With EU Posted: 25 Apr 2022 02:41 AM PDT European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to launch the European Union-India Trade and Technology Council, the second such initiative for the 27-member bloc following the first one set up with the US. This comes as PM Modi and the EU chief held bilateral talks in New Delhi, where they reviewed progress in the India-EU strategic partnership and agreed to deepen cooperation in areas of trade, climate, digital technology and people-to-people ties. Welcoming PM Modi’s decision to launch the EU-India Trade and Technology Council, the EU chief said, “The EU has only one Trade and Technology Council in place and that is with the US. I think, therefore, it is time that it is so important for us to put up a second Trade and Technology Council with India. We have India as a technological powerhouse.” The EU chief also noted that 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the EU-India relationship. “I think this relationship today is more important than ever. We’re vibrant democracies, large economies and have a lot in common but we are also facing a challenging political landscape. So, I appreciate this meet,” she stated. Meanwhile, PM Modi said that the relations between India and European Union (EU) are reaching new heights under the leadership of EU chief Von der Leyen. Appreciating the EU chief’s presence at the upcoming Raisina Dialogue, PM Modi said, “Your words in the Raisina Dialogue will not only be limited to the intellectual and academic world of India but the world is waiting for what you have to say today.” “I am happy that when our foreign minister came, you organized a good meeting and provided an opportunity for discussions. I believe that under your leadership, India-EU relations are achieving new heights and new areas for cooperation are being created. Our cooperation will further our ties,” he added. |
| Key Congress Meet Underway On Prashant Kishor’s Revamp Proposal Posted: 25 Apr 2022 02:26 AM PDT The Congress top brass is set to begin its crucial meeting today to further discuss poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s proposal to revamp the party ahead of the 2024 general election. Sources said, “Congress leaders’ committee has been formed to consider Prashant Kishor’s proposal. The committee has submitted its report to interim party president Sonia Gandhi. A meeting will take place at 10, Janpath today.” Committee members KC Venugopal, Digvijaya Singh, Ambika Soni, Randeep Surjewala, Jairam Ramesh, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are present right now at 10 Janpath, sources told ANI. The Congress panel set up by Sonia Gandhi to work out a revival plan, as suggested by poll strategist Prashant Kishor, had submitted a report on its ‘findings’ on Friday. A Congress leader, who’s part of the panel, said that the committee went through Kishor’s proposals in detail and submitted its report to Sonia Gandhi. The group, comprising Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala, P Chidambaram, Ambika Soni, Jairam Ramesh, and Mukul Wasnik, has submitted their views in a detailed report on Kishor’s suggestions. According to sources, most of the suggestions have been found to be practical and useful. “As far as Prashant Kishor’s role is concerned, Gandhi will take the final call on it,” sources said. Sources have also hinted that senior party leaders hold different views about Kishor and his role in the party. “It looks like a strange equation. He is neither formally part of I-PAC nor does he hold any position in the organisation. Yet, they don’t function without him,” a senior Congress leader said. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has openly praised Prashant Kishor, saying that he is a “brand”. Senior Congress leader Veerapa Moily has said that those opposing Kishor’s entry to the party are “anti-reformers”. Some leaders have also said that Kishor’s relations with a few regional parties could benefit Congress if he formally joins the party. Getting Kishor to join Congress is a big challenge that the party will be facing, especially the decision on the capacity that he will be holding. Kishor’s proactive role can leave many leaders uncomfortable, sources added. |

He further targeted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) over the modification of the syllabus and termed it ‘Rashtriya Shiksha Shredder’. “Rashtriya Shiksha Shredder,” tweeted Rahul Gandhi today and attached an image along with the tweet which shows a shredding machine cutting topics like democracy and diversity, impact of globalisation on agriculture, non-aligned movement, the Mugal court, industrial revolution, poem of Faiz, while showing issues like employment, communal harmony and freedom of institutions shredded. The Congress MP’s remark came after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) removed chapters dealing with the rise of Islamic empires in Afro-Asian territories, chronicles of Mughal courts, the Cold War, and the industrial revolution from the History and Political Science syllabus of classes 11 and 12. In a similar fashion on earlier occasions as well, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke sharply against the RSS. On April 16, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of fueling hate in the country. “Every Indian is paying the price for the hate fueled by BJP-RSS,” Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter. In his tweet, he also shared an article written by Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi where she accused the BJP-led central government of ‘the rising chorus of hatred, the unconcealed instigation of aggression’ and ‘crimes against minorities.’ On April 9, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lashed out at RSS at a book launch event in Delhi by saying, “To save Constitution, we have to protect institutions which are in the hands of RSS.” |
