COVID-19: Possibility Of New Variants Of Omicron In Delhi

Posted: 21 Apr 2022 04:16 AM PDT

With the latest spike of more than 1000 COVID-19 cases in the national capital in a single day, the health experts believed that possibilities of new variants of the Omicron are emerging and they are being sequenced.

Delhi on Wednesday reported 1,009 fresh cases, the highest since February 10, while the positivity rate is 5.70 per cent. The top expert believes that there are eight variants of Omicron and amongst them, one is dominating which can be held responsible for the surge in cases.

Speaking to ANI, Dr SK Sarin, Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) said that there is a possibility of new variants of Omicron in Delhi while adding that the samples at the ILBS lab have been sequenced.

“There is a possibility that new variants are emerging of the Omicron and they are being sequenced,” said Dr Sarin.

Dr Sarin further said that there are eight variants of Omicron and amongst them, one is dominating.

“I think by today at our institute ILBS many samples have been sequenced and I think there are eight variants of which one is now dominating, we will come to know slowly,” he told ANI.

According to the sources to ANI, BA.2.12.1 is the variant which is a sibling of Omicron and is also responsible for the sudden surge in Delhi.

Dr Sarin warned and said that people need to be careful.

“I would suggest people should be very careful. There is a fear that children may get infected because they are not adequately vaccinated. People must wear masks,” he added.

Since the beginning of April, India has been continuously registering a rise in COVID cases daily. However, on Monday, the country recorded about a 90 per cent jump with 2,183 cases.

Naqvi Slams Politicisation Over Jahangirpuri Violence, Demolition Drive

Posted: 21 Apr 2022 03:24 AM PDT

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday launched attack on the opposition leaders who blamed the BJP-led government after bulldozers rolled into Jahangirpuri for a demolition. saying that leaders should understand that “the issue is not about bulldozer rolled for demolition but is to stop the rebellion and the rebels.”

After bulldozers rolled into Jahangirpuri for a demolition drive by North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) on Wednesday morning, the political mercury has been increasing. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and other leaders have been constantly attacking BJP led government after bulldozers rolled into Jahangirpuri for a demolition.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi sneered at BJP’s move to start an encroachment drive in Jahangirpuri and said that the bulldozers must be used to end hatred among people.

“This is demolition of India’s constitutional values. This is state-sponsored targeting of the poor and minorities. BJP must bulldoze the hatred in their hearts instead,” tweeted Gandhi.

Responding to the opposition, Union Minister said, “Whether it’s Rahul Gandhi or all political creatures, they should understand that the issue is not a bulldozer rolled for demolition, but is to stop the rebellion and the rebels.”

Naqvi counter-attacked on the opposition and said, “They (opposition) are trying to create confusion. Some people became used to creating confusion in the name of secularism and communism and to create an atmosphere of fear. I will advise them that ‘Provoking should not be a priority but Peace should be.”

He further said that “They are trying to make a communal shield in this and sending a message to the whole world that the minority is unsafe here in the country. This is being done under a very well-planned conspiracy.”

While responding to TMC sending a fact-finding committee from West Bengal for information on the Jahangirpuri violence case, Naqvi said that it would have been better if the team goes to Birbhum where the massacre is happening instead of sending the team here.

Russia Controls Mariupol; Putin Hails ‘Liberation’ Of The City

Posted: 21 Apr 2022 02:58 AM PDT

President Vladimir Putin hailed Russia’s “liberation” of Mariupol after defence minister Sergei Shoigu, announced that Moscow controls the city apart from the Azovstal steel plant, where Ukrainian soldiers remain.

Congratulating the country on the feat, Putin said, “Block off this industrial area so that not even a fly can escape.”

“Mariupol has been liberated,” Shoigu told Putin during a televised meeting. “The remaining nationalist formations took refuge in the industrial zone of the Azovstal plant.”

Shoigu said around 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers remained inside the plant, where the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance has been sheltering, using the facility’s network of underground tunnels.

Taking full control of Mariupol on the Azov Sea would be a major strategic victory for Russia, helping it to connect annexed Crimea to the territories of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

iPhone 14 To Get Autofocus Selfie Cameras In Major Upgrade

Posted: 21 Apr 2022 02:42 AM PDT

Washington [US]: Apple is set to unveil its upcoming iPhone 14 series later this year, with an upgraded front camera that can enable autofocus selfies. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared the details of the camera feature in a tweet.

As per reports from GSMArena, the apple analyst has confirmed that all iPhones coming later this year will boast of autofocus front-facing cameras with an f/1.9 aperture.

This comes as a major upgrade over past iPhones as they had persistently stuck with fixed focus selfie shooters and f/2.2 apertures for a long time.

Talking about the features of the autofocus selfie camera, Kuo said in his tweet, “AF support and a lower f-number can provide a better shallow depth-of-field effect for selfie/portrait mode. In addition, AF can also enhance the focus effect for FaceTime/video call/live streaming.”

The wider aperture allows the sensors to capture more light which results in better daytime and low light shots, much to the benefit of photo, video calling and live-streaming apps.

The addition of autofocus allows for better subject tracking and improved depth of field in stills and videos especially when it comes to Portrait mode.

In another report, Kuo also suggested that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max may feature a 48-MP wide image sensor for the back camera, which may result in a more prominent camera bump.

The upcoming iPhone 14 line-up is said to include the four models iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. They are expected to arrive later this year in September.

Congress Group Reaches Jahangirpuri To Meet Families

Posted: 21 Apr 2022 01:31 AM PDT

New Delhi [India]: A group of Congress leaders, including general secretary Ajay Maken, on Thursday, reached Delhi’s Jahangirpuri to meet the families affected by yesterday’s demolition drive in the area.

The Congress group that visited Jahangirpuri will submit a report to the party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi, said a member of the 16-member group. “We have come to Jahangirpuri to meet the victims. Police have been cooperative. We have come here to tell the people that this should not be seen from the prism of religion,” Maken told media persons.

Congress leader Imran Pratapgarhi, a delegation member, said, “We will meet the affected families. Later, we will submit a report to Sonia Gandhi.”

Former Congress MLA Hari Shankar Gupta, who arrived at the site before the delegation, said that permission for meeting the people was sought from the police. “We do not want to disturb the peace here but only meet the affected families,” he added.

Condemning the demolition drive carried out by Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled North Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Gupta said, “They (the civic body) did not obey the Supreme Court’s orders. They shouldn’t have dared to carry on with the demolition drive in contempt of the apex court. In the coming days, this can set a dangerous precedent.”

The 16-member group of Congress includes Delhi Congress chief Anil Chaudhry and AICC in-charge of Delhi Shakti Sinh Gohil among others.

Ajay Maken on Wednesday apologised for not being able to reach the area while the demolition drive was going on.

“Jahangirpuri demolition without notice/procedure is entirely illegal… Tomorrow morning, along with other senior leaders, I will visit the site. Sorry for not being there today,” said Maken in a tweet yesterday.

The visit of the Congress delegation comes after Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo member Brinda Karat visited the demolition site on Wednesday and called the BJP-ruled civic body’s demolition drive unconstitutional.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi also visited Jahangirpuri on Wednesday and termed it a “targeted drive against a particular community”.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has also decided to send a fact-finding team to the national capital on Friday, as per party sources.

Violence broke out between two communities in Jahanagirpuri on April 16 during a Hanuman Jayanti procession. The incident left nine people injured, including eight police personnel and a civilian.

Following the incident, the BJP ruled North MCD had scheduled an “encroachment removal action drive against the illegal construction in the Jahangirpuri area”.
After the demolition drive started on Wednesday, Supreme Court ordered a “status-quo”.

The demolition drive was criticised by Opposition leaders, including Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Rahul Gandhi, Asaduddin Owaisi, Delhi Environment Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gopal Rai, Brinda Karat among others.

The Supreme Court has halted demolition drive in Jahangirpuri for next two weeks, and has warned that it “will take a serious view of the demolitions carried out after information was given to Mayor.”

Imran Govt Ousted Due To Strained Ties With Establishment: PTI leader

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 11:21 PM PDT

Islamabad [Pakistan]: In an apparent reference to the Pakistan army, the country’s former information and law minister Fawad Chaudhry has said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was ousted as its ties with the establishment were “strained”.

This comes as PTI led by Imran Khan had repeatedly blamed the US for backing the no-confidence motion that lead to his ouster.

Khan along with his part has refused to accept the newly elected prime minister. “Had our [relationship] with the establishment been good, then we would have still been in the government,” Fawad Chaudhry said during an interview with a private TV channel on PTI’s belief that strained ties with the establishment lead to the fall of the government.

He said the ties started deteriorating a few months back and despite trying to mend them, he could not do so, Geo News reported.

This remark comes as the Pakistani Army is facing rising public scorn to the extent that the Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and his influential public relations department are desperately trying to stem the tide of anger against the military.

The social media campaign, spearheaded by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, has spread dissonance among the army leadership about General Bajwa’s failure to protect the army’s reputation, Islam Khabar reported.

After the fall of his government, Imran Khan started a countrywide protest campaign. In two successive rallies in Peshawar and Karachi this month, a large number of people came out in support of Khan.

His next rally on Thursday, which he is slated to address in person, is scheduled to take place today at the Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore. Imran Khan has called upon the masses to come to Minar-e-Pakistan to attend the PTI’s protest rally.

Taking to social media, the ousted Prime Minister recorded a video message before the Minar-e-Pakistan rally saying, “I invite all Pakistanis to join this struggle. On Thursday, I’m going to hold the largest rally in the history of Pakistan at Minar-e-Pakistan.”

He urged the citizens to join their struggle for the real freedom of the country from Minar-e-Pakistan.

UK PM Boris Johnson Arrives In India For Two-Day Visit

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 08:45 PM PDT

Ahmedabad (Gujarat): UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday arrived in India. He landed at Gujarat’s Ahmedabad for a two-day visit to India with focus on stepping up cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, giving momentum to negotiations on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries as well as enhancing defence ties.

On arriving for his two-day visit to India, Johnson started his visit from Ahmedabad where he is scheduled to meet with leading business group leaders and discuss the UK and India’s thriving commercial, trade, and people’s links.

This will be the first time a UK Prime Minister will visit Gujarat, India’s fifth-largest state and the ancestral home of around half of the British-Indian population in the UK.

On Friday morning, Johnson will attend a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan and later a wreath-laying at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.

The UK Prime Minister will then travel to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Modi on April 22 where the leaders will hold in-depth talks on the UK and India’s strategic defence, diplomatic and economic partnership, aimed at bolstering close partnership and stepping up security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

The UK Prime Minister will also hold talks with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar. On the same afternoon, the two sides will issue a press statement at around 1 pm at Hyderabad House.

According to a statement by British High Commission, Johnson will use the visit to drive progress in the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations launched earlier this year as a deal with India is predicted to boost UK’s total trade by up to 28 billion pounds annually by 2035 and increase incomes across the UK by up to 3 billion pounds.

Last year, Johnson and PM Modi agreed on a UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, announcing more than 530 million pounds in investment into the UK and committing to a deeper bilateral relationship across trade, health, climate, defence and security, and connecting our people.

India was also identified as a priority relationship for the UK in the 2021 Integrated Review and was invited by the UK as a guest to last year’s G7 in Carbis Bay.

The third round of negotiations will begin next week and the two sides are keen to double bilateral trade by 2030.

The two countries are also exploring the possibility of an interim agreement to provide quick gains for benefitting businesses on both sides.

The United Kingdom is also looking to increase its footprint in defence production in India.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s visit to India beginning comes amid the rising importance of the Indo-Pacific and India’s centrality in the region with the two countries set to further intensify cooperation across the full spectrum of bilateral ties.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict is expected to figure in the bilateral talks with Johnson putting forth UK position and listening to the Indian perspective while not lecturing India, sources said.

They said the two sides understand and respect each other’s position on Ukraine and it will be part of the discussion.

COVID-19: China Logs 2,830 New Cases

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 08:32 PM PDT

Witnessing a surge in new COVID-19 cases, China on Wednesday reported 2,830 locally transmitted confirmed cases, the National Health Commission said on Thursday.

Of these new locally transmitted cases, China’s economic hub Shanghai reported 2,634 cases and 15,861 local asymptomatic infections, Xinhua reported. Across China, cities are locking down their residents, supply lines are rupturing, and officials are scrambling to secure the movement of basic goods, with its largest-ever recorded outbreak of COVID-19 threatening to spiral into a national crisis of the government’s own making.

At least 44 Chinese cities are under either a full or partial lockdown as authorities persist in trying to curb the spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant, according to a report from investment bank Nomura and CNN.
In Shanghai, the epicentre of the country’s latest outbreak, scenes once unimaginable for the hyper-modern financial capital have become part of the daily struggle for 25 million people.

There, residents forbidden to leave the confines of their apartments or housing blocks for weeks have been desperate for food and freedom — some seen in social media clips screaming out of their windows in frustration or clashing with hazmat-clad workers, reported CNN.

The current situation may mark the most significant challenge for the country — and, arguably, for Chinese leader Xi Jinping against zero Covid policy.
Getting supplies across the country has become a steep challenge, with some expressways closed, and truck drivers ensnared in quarantine or at thousands of highway health checkpoints.

Some cities have discouraged their residents from leaving, like the major southern port of Guangzhou, which requires its 18 million people to show a negative COVID test if they want to get out. Moreover, the zero-covid policy has sparked mounting frustration and anger in Shanghai and threatens more disruption amplifying the risks for the Communist Party.

Hong Kong Authorities Continue To Punish Dissenting Voices

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 08:26 PM PDT

Hong Kong: The recent arrest in Hong Kong of a journalism professor, on charges of conspiring to publish seditious material, has troubled academics and journalists alike and shows how the city authorities continue to punish dissenting voices.

Allan Au, 54, a lecturer and consultant at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) journalism school was detained by city authorities on April 11. Allan was later released without charge, Voice of America (VOA) reported.

Allan, whose writing touched on issues such as the national security law, has worked as a producer for TVB News. He was a Knight Fellow at Stanford University in 2006.

Moreover, he also provided commentary for the Ming Pao newspaper and Stand News.

Political and law expert Eric Yan-ho Lai said, “This arrest gives a disturbing message and signals a chilling effect to outspoken opinion writers as well as academics who commit themselves in public debate.”

“Dr. Au’s research and teaching interests are censorship and self-censorship in the industry of journalism. His arrest is obviously, and sadly, an example of how the authorities censor and punish dissenting voices in the city,” Yan-ho Lai told VOA.

According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Hong Kong authorities are determined to eradicate press freedom and continue to punish dissenting voices.

“The detention of a third journalist from Stand News … months after the media’s forced shutdown shows the government’s determination to put an end to press freedom in the territory,” the group’s East Asia bureau head, Cedric Alviani, said in a statement.

RSF has said that Hong Kong’s use of legal action, including the National Security Law, to punish what it deems “crimes against the state” has made journalism more dangerous.

In a report titled The Great Leap Backwards of Journalism in China, published on December 7, 2021, RSF revealed the system of censorship and information control established by the Chinese regime and the global threat it poses to press freedom and democracy.

Hong Kong, once a bastion of press freedom, has fallen from 18th place in 2002 to 80th place in the 2020 RSF World Press Freedom Index. The People’s Republic of China, for its part, has stagnated at 177th out of 180.

11 Chinese Military Aircrafts Enter Taiwan’s Air Defence Zone

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 08:16 PM PDT

Taipei [Taiwan]: Eleven Chinese military aircrafts entered Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ) on Wednesday, local media reported.

In response to the Chinese military aircrafts entering Taiwan’s ADIZ, the Ministry of National Defence sent aircraft, issued radio warnings, and deployed air defence missile systems to track the 11 Chinese planes.

Seven Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, one Shaanxi Y-8 EW electronic warfare plane, and one Shaanxi KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft appeared in the southwestern corner of the ADIZ, where most of the Chinese jets have been spotted, Taiwan News reported.

According to Taiwan News, two Xi’an H-6 strategic bombers continued on their journey south of Taiwan before reentering the country’s ADIZ in the southeast.

Wednesday saw the highest number of intrusions by Chinese military aircraft for April as tension continues over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

An ADIZ is an area that extends beyond a country’s airspace where air traffic controllers ask incoming aircraft to identify themselves.

Beijing claims full sovereignty over Taiwan, a democracy of almost 24 million people located off the southeastern coast of mainland China, despite the fact that the two sides have been governed separately for more than seven decades.

Taipei, on the other hand, has countered the Chinese aggression by increasing strategic ties with democracies including the US, which has been repeatedly opposed by Beijing.

China has threatened that “Taiwan’s independence” means war.

After a touching proposal, the grand wedding was hailed as the decade’s best ‘star wedding.’ In times when there were no social media hashtags and minute-to-minute social media coverage, people around the country remained glued to their television screens just to get a glimpse of the bride and groom.

From their proposal to welcoming their first child, here’s a timeline of the adorable couple’s relationship.

The first meeting
As revealed by Abhishek, the first time the couple saw each other was in 1999, during a photoshoot for their film ‘Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke’.

When love brew
The gradual transition from being friends to partners reportedly took place in 2006-2007, where in a period of one year, three of their films were released. It was during this phase, that they got an opportunity to know each other inside-out.

At that point, no one knew that the on-screen chemistry between the two lead actors in ‘Dhoom 2’, ‘Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Guru’, was soon going to change into a real-life relationship.

The first Bachchan ensemble
The first time we got to see Abhishek, Amitabh and the would-be Mrs Bachchan together on screen was during ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ (2005).

The iconic song ‘Kajra Re’ where the father-son duo rocks the stage with the ever-beautiful Aishwarya is one of the most memorable moments in the ‘Abhi-Aish’ timeline.

The Proposal
When Abhishek and Aishwarya travelled to Toronto for the premiere of their film ‘Guru’ in 2007, Abhishek had planned an adorable proposal for Aishwarya.

Bengal Means Blood: Suvendu Adhikari Counters Business Summit’s Theme

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 07:08 PM PDT

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday equated West Bengal with “blood”, referring to the incidents of post-poll violence in the state, and said that it is not a Bengal for business, as the Bengal global business summit intends to showcase.

Adhikari’s comment comes in contradiction with Bengal Global Business Summit’s theme “Bengal Means Business”. As per the official website of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), the sixth edition of the business congregation this year intends to “showcase the world that ‘Bengal Means Business’ and to explore more business opportunities, forge partnership and collaboration.”

Slamming Banerjee who laid out the eight-pillar strategy for the development of the state as a global hub for business, the Leader of Opposition said that “syndicate raj” prevails in the state, leaving no space for industries to flourish.

“…Can’t have industries in Bengal, land policy is bad. There is syndicate raj here, be it coal…This is not Bengal for business, but Bengal for blood, and Bengal for ‘Birbhum bomb’,” he told ANI.

Earlier this month, the police had recovered crude bombs in a plastic bag near a football ground in Birbhum’s Sikandarpur village.

The crude bombs were recovered at a time when the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the violence at Bogtui village in which at least eight people including two children were charred to death.

Following the Birbhum violence, West Bengal police had carried out raids to recover arms and ammunition from across the state.

On being asked whether he received the invitation to the Bengal global business summit, Adhikari said that the Opposition has no recognition in the state, and alleged that the state government is “for the family, by the family”.

“No question of invitation…LoP in Bengal has no recognition. The system is such that it’s for the family, by the family, and of the ‘Kalighat Banerjee family’…” he said.

The two-day ‘Bengal Global Business Summit’ began at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed and Lalit Yadav scalped two wickets each for DC while Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman picked one. Among batters, David Warner remained not out on 60 while Prithvi Shaw played a quick knock of 41.

For Punjab Kings, no batter was able to leave his mark. Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma and skipper Mayank Agarwal top-scored with knocks of 32 and 24 respectively. Rahul Chahar scalped the lone wicket of Shaw in the match for Punjab.

The only way for Punjab Kings to make a match of their total was by picking few early wickets. But, instead, it was carnage from Shaw and Warner. The pair recorded their fourth consecutive 50 plus opening stand and reached the landmark in just 3.3 overs.
Their show didn’t stop there as they raced to 81 in the powerplay, making it the highest for the season. After that, it was a mere formality as they chased down the total in 10.3 overs and boosted the team’s NRR.

Earlier, put in to bat first, Punjab Kings had a bad start as they amassed 47 runs with the loss of three wickets in the first six overs. In the fourth over, Lalit Yadav struck to remove Shikhar Dhawan. Veteran opener tried to paddle the wide of leg delivery but the ball teased the bat and the catch was taken by the keeper.

Mustafizur Rahman removed PBKS skipper Mayank Agarwal in the very next over. And in the last over of the powerplay, Axar Patel dismissed in-form batter, Liam Livingstone.

In the 7th over, Khaleel Ahmed also joined the wicket-taking party as he sent Jonny Bairstow back into the pavilion.

Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan then tried to rebuild the innings for Punjab in the middle overs. The 31-run partnership finally came to an end after Axar Patel struck to remove Jitesh Sharma in the 13th over. Patel bowled a full-length ball to which Jitesh Sharma played a sweep shot and missed the ball which hit him in his pads resulting in LBW.

In the next over, Kuldeep Yadav also joined the wicket-taking DC bowlers as he removed Kagiso Rabada and Nathan Ellis to put more misery on PBKS. In the 15th over, Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Shah Rukh Khan for his second wicket of the night.
Lalit Yadav also got his second wicket after removing Rahul Chahar in the 18th over. In the last ball of the last over, Rishabh Pant ran out Arshdeep Singh.

Brief Scores: Punjab Kings 115/10 (Jitesh Sharma 32, Mayank Agarwal 24; Axar Patel 2-10) vs Delhi Capitals (David Warner 60*, Prithvi Shaw 41; Rahul Chahar 1-21).

Covid-19: Wearing Of Masks Mandatory At Public Places In Delhi

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 08:43 AM PDT

In view of the rising COVID-19 cases in the national capital over the past few days, the Delhi government on Wednesday made the wearing of masks mandatory at public places, said Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.

Sources said that it also imposed Rs 500 penalty for defying the norm. However, the schools will continue in offline mode but the management has to ensure that COVID-19 protocols are strictly followed, said sources.

Lieutenant Governor, in a series of tweets, informed that the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), in its 36th meeting today, decided to come up with a separate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for schools in consultation with experts.

“It was also emphasised that in consultation with experts standard operating procedures for prevention and management of COVID-19 should be laid down for schools and their strict enforcement by school management should be ensured,” he said.

“In the larger interest of students, in case of non-compliance or violation of SOPs penalty as deemed appropriate should be imposed for creating a deterrent effect. Advised all the agencies to remain vigilant and work in coordination to tackle the situation as it emerges,” the Governor added.

As per the expert’s advice, it was decided to enhance testing, focus on vaccination coverage of the targeted population and ensure strict enforcement of COVID appropriate behaviour.

The meeting was chaired by Lieutenant Governor to review the COVID-19 situation in Delhi along with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Minister Revenue Kgahlot, Chief Secretary, Dr Randeep Guleria-Director AIIMS, Dr SK Singh-NCDC and other senior officers.

Nearly three weeks ago, when Delhi witnessed a dip in the daily infections, the DDMA had issued an order removing the fine for not wearing masks. However, it had advised people to continue using them in crowded places.

Over the past few days, the daily COVID-19 infection has been on the rise. According to yesterday’s bulletin, Delhi recorded 632 fresh cases. For the third consecutive day, the national capital reported over 500 daily infections.

The positivity rate, however, dropped to 4.42 per cent from 7.72 per cent on Monday.

Supplying Arms To Ukraine Does Not Make Germany Party To Conflict: Foreign Minister

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 08:22 AM PDT

Germany supports the countries of Eastern Europe in supplying Soviet-made weapons to Ukraine amid Russia’s special military operation, but believes that such deliveries do not make the country a party to the conflict, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Wednesday.

“We support those partners who can promptly supply Soviet-made weapons. In this case, we guarantee compensation [for the weapons] so these countries can deliver supplies quickly. At the same time, I want to make it clear that we, in the government, are unanimous that supplies of weapons will not make us a party to the conflict,” Baerbock said at a press conference in Riga, broadcast by the German Foreign Ministry.

On February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine after the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk appealed for help in defending themselves against Ukrainian forces. The Russian Defense Ministry said the special operation is targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only. Moscow has repeatedly stressed that it has no plans to occupy Ukraine.

Western countries had been arming Ukraine for months prior to the Russian operation. Ukraine has now asked the European Union and the United States for more weapons, including air defense and anti-missile systems, fighters, mortars, and automatic weapons.

Increased Connectivity Between India, Vietnam To Boost Economies Of Both Countries: Om Birla

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 05:38 AM PDT

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday said that the new and increased connectivity between Vietnam and India will generate business and tourism opportunities, which will boost the economies of both countries.

Birla’s remarks came as he, along with Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Vuong Dinh Hue, restored the suspended direct air services between the two countries after the COVID-19 pandemic and also inaugurated air services on new routes, giving a new dimension to air services between two countries.

Before the outbreak of the pandemic, Vietnamese airline VietJet was operating regular flights from Hanoi and Ho Chin Minh City to New Delhi. Apart from this, Charter flights were also being operated to the major Buddhist spiritual centre Bodh Gaya.

However, the services that were suspended after the pandemic struck, have now been resumed during the visit of Birla. The two existing services between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and New Delhi will resume on April 29 and April 30.

Additionally, four new routes will connect Hanoi-Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City-Mumbai and the southern resort island of Phu Quoc with New Delhi and Mumbai. Vietjet Air will operate four roundtrip flights each week on the HCM City-Mumbai route from June 2 and three weekly round-trip flights on the Hanoi-Mumbai route from June 3.

Similarly, four roundtrip flights will be available on the Phu Quoc-Mumbai route every week and three flights on the Phu Quoc-New Delhi route will be available from September 8 and 9.

An Indian parliamentary delegation led by Birla arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam on a three-day visit here on Tuesday and held bilateral meetings with several high-level leaders of the country.

During the three-day visit to Vietnam, Birla will also lay a wreath at Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and will meet the Party Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City, Ngyuen Van Nen. He will also attend a community-cum business event in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday.
The delegation accompanying the Lok Sabha speaker consists of MPs CP Joshi, Riti Pathak, Rahul Ramesh Shewale, Rajani Patil, Harnath Singh Yadav, Mitesh Rameshbhai Patel, and Lok Sabha Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh.

COVID-19: Top Scientist Believes Surge In Cases Will Not Lead To Fourth Wave

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 05:17 AM PDT

Even as some of the States and Union Territories are seeing a significant rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, the top scientist believes that the surge in infection will not lead to the fourth wave by any chance.

Speaking to ANI, the former Chief Scientist of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr R Gangakhedkar said that India has sublineages of the Omicron variant but no new variant has been reported so far and the chances of the fourth wave can’t be seen as of now. “I don’t think this is the fourth wave by any chance. One thing we have to understand is that the entire world continues to have BA.2 variants, which is infecting people every day,” he said.

He further elaborated that due to the opening of schools and colleges, the people have become socially active resultantly the surge in cases is being witnessed.

“The second issue is that we have allowed the schools to open as well as the college students are moving now. The result is now that they are out in the open, they are getting infected and clusters of those infections can be sizable mainly because of social networks,” said Dr Gangakhedkar.

According to Dr Gangakhedkar, “The withdrawal of the use of masks is also the reason for the surge in cases. It is also true that some of us still have misunderstood the mandatory use of masks, which has been withdrawn. Some of us may be presuming that there is no fear of acquiring any infection so I can move freely and they have stopped using the mask and therefore, they also get infected if they come in contact with somebody who’s infected as of now.”

“So essentially this kind of a reaction when you relax the lockdown is more likely to come and we may see a smaller surge,” he added while cautioning against removing masks.

He also said that infection from Omicron is going to persist for six to nine months and recombinant variants are an accident that will not lead to the fourth wave.

“The last thing which we have to remember is when we talk in terms of these newer variants, which are coming BA.4, BA.5 from South Africa, and the recombinant variants that are coming, there are two factors which will have proven that all these variants continue to belong to Omicron family. So whatever protection that natural infection has given to us is likely to persist for a longer period. It could be about six to nine months’ time. And it is also important to remember at recombinant variants, by and large, do not live longer to spread the infection because recombination events are an accident. And that’s not the natural evolution of the virus. So we need not worry in terms of the emergence of the fourth wave,” he added.

Since the beginning of April, India has been continuously registering a rise in COVID cases daily. However, on Monday, the country recorded about a 90 per cent jump with 2,183 cases.

Tesla Resumes Operations At Shanghai Plant In China

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:59 AM PDT

US electric carmaker Tesla has resumed production at its plant in China’s Shanghai after the local authorities had issued a guideline on relaunching business operation following a massive COVID-19 outbreak in the city, a senior plant official said on Wednesday.

“We will ramp up the output over the next three to four days to resume one-shift production,” Song Gang, a director of manufacturing at the Tesla plant in Shanghai, said, as quoted by China Daily. Production of car batteries and electrical equipment resumed on Tuesday, as about 8,000 workers returned to the factory on Sunday and Monday, according to the report.

Tesla’s suppliers of spare parts based in Shanghai, as well as neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, have resumed supplies as well, Song said.

Last week, Tesla denied media reports that the production pause at the Shanghai plant due to the COVID-19 lockdown will continue until mid-May.

The plant in Shanghai was Tesla’s first outside the United States, with more than half of the electric vehicles produced there shipped to Europe and Asian countries last year. China itself is one of Tesla’s key markets.

On March 28, Shanghai’s population of 25 million was put under lockdown in connection with a new outbreak of coronavirus cases. Originally planned to last until April 5, it was later extended indefinitely due to the high incidence of COVID-19 infections.

Mamata Banerjee ‘Most Suited’ Opposition Candidate For 2024 PM Post: Ripun Bora

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:50 AM PDT

Veteran politician and TMC leader Ripun Bora on Wednesday said that the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banarjee is the “most suitable” opposition candidate for Prime Minister’s post in the 2024 Lok Sabha General election because she is fighting alone aggressively against BJP.

Speaking to ANI Ripun Bora said, “I have full respect for all the opposition leaders but considering the ground reality, I have seen Mamata Banerjee is the only one fighting aggressively against Modi.” Bora further told ANI that she is a vastly experienced Chief Minister for the last three terms. “She was a Member of Parliament seven times.

Even after the becoming Chief Minister, in the past one year, she have been trying without any break to unite all opposition right from KCR to Sharad Pawar to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and holding meetings to unite for one opposition front.”

“Considering all this ground reality my personal opinion is that Mamta Banerjee would be the best-suited candidate for the opposition Prime Minister candidate in 2024”, he further added.

Former Senior Congress leader Ripun had on April 17 joined TMC in Kolkata and alleged that the Congress party from grassroots to top-level was fighting among each other instead of fighting against the BJP.

UK PM Boris Johnson To Begin Two-Day India Visit Tomorrow

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:46 AM PDT

New Delhi [India]: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to arrive in India on Thursday for a two-day visit to deepen the long-term partnership for peace and prosperity with a fellow leading democracy.

Johnson will begin his two-day India visit from Ahmedabad in Gujarat on April 21 to meet with leading business group leaders and discuss the UK and India’s thriving commercial, trade and people’s links.

UK Prime Minister will also hold talks with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar.

On the same afternoon, the two sides will issue a press statement at around 1 pm at Hyderabad House.

According to the British High Commission statement, Johnson will use the visit to drive progress in the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations launched earlier this year as a deal with India is predicted to boost UK’s total trade by up to 28 billion pounds annually by 2035 and increase incomes across the UK by up to 3 billion pounds.

EU And China Fault Lines Exposed At 23rd Bilateral Summit

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:38 AM PDT

Beijing [China]: The 23rd EU and China Summit, which took place from March 31-April 1, exposed the existing fault lines between the two parties.

President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by High Representative Josep Borrell, representing the EU, met Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang in the morning and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the afternoon.

The EU and China discussed extensively Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, which is endangering global security and the world’s economy, as well as food and energy security.

“As major global powers, the EU and China must work together on stopping Russia’s war in Ukraine as soon as possible. We have a common responsibility to maintain peace and stability, and a safe and sustainable world,” said Charles Michel, President of the European Council.

The EU and Chinese leaders also discussed the state of bilateral relations and areas of shared interest such as climate change, biodiversity and health, as well as ways to ensure a more balanced and reciprocal trade relationship.

The EU highlighted that its key priority is to stop Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, emphasised the importance for Russia to allow humanitarian access and safeguard humanitarian corridors, and refrain from targeting the civilian population and infrastructure.

The EU called on China to support efforts to bring about an immediate end to the bloodshed in Ukraine, consistent with China’s role in the world as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and its uniquely close relations with Russia.

The EU pointed out that the international sanctions against Russia were imposed with the sole purpose of stopping Russia’s aggression and despite a significant economic impact on the EU and its partners globally.

“Any circumvention of the effects of the sanctions or any aid provided to Russia would prolong the bloodshed and lead to even greater losses of civilian lives and economic disruption,” the EU said.

In contrast to what EU leaders said, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the EU to form its own perception of China, adopt an independent China policy, and work with China to promote the steady and sustained growth of China-EU relations and to add stabilising factors to a turbulent world.

Xi stressed that China and the EU should act as two major forces upholding world peace, and offset uncertainties in the international landscape with the stability of China-EU relations.

The Chinese president also pointed out that China and the EU should act as two big markets promoting shared development, and deepen economic globalisation through open cooperation. China will stay committed to deepening reform and further opening up.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, several European countries have asked Beijing to align with US and allies in condemning Moscow’s actions. While refusing to sanction Russia, China accused the US of fuelling the Ukraine crisis.

Despite booming trade, the EU-China ties have become strained over the last two years, with a long-negotiated investment deal between the two sides under hiatus.

Experts believe that China-EU trade could see some strains over Beijing’s stance on the Ukraine war. China surpassed the US to become the EU’s largest trading partner in 2020-21 due to strong demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the ministry, reasons for shortfall in ONGC crude oil production include less than anticipated production from WO-16 cluster due to delay in mobilisation of MOPU Sagar Samrat; less oil production in NBP field due to shutdown taken for mandatory inspections of FPSO for class certification and less condensate receipt at Hazira due to less gas production from B&S Asset.

SC Agrees To Hear Plea Seeking Payments To MNREGA Workers

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:29 AM PDT

New Delhi [India]: The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to list for hearing a plea seeking directions to redress the situation of workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MNREGA) in the country claiming that their pending wages are piling up along with negative balances in funds of most of the states.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana agreed to list the matter after advocate Prashant Bhushan appearing for petitioner NGO Swaraj Abhiyan mentioned the matter for urgent listing. Bhushan asked the bench to list the matter for hearing as MGNREGA workers are not getting paid.

“I will list it,” said the CJI.

Swaraj Abhiyan had filed an application seeking direction from the Central government to ensure that all pending wage, material and administrative payments pending is cleared within 30 days.

The plea said crores of workers were in a crisis as funds-starved states had run up wage dues of Rs 9,682 crore under the Centre’s flagship 100-day job scheme MGNREGA which has witnessed an increase in beneficiaries because of the pandemic.

It said as of November 26, 2021, the state governments were facing cumulative wage dues of Rs 9,682 crore and 100 per cent of the funds allocated for the financial year had been exhausted.

The plea claimed that wage dues were piling up under the MNREGA as most states had not received adequate funds under the scheme.

The shortage of funds that was being cited was a gross violation of the law, added the plea.

The NGO sought urgent directions from the court to provide 50 additional days of employment a year under the MGNREGA to each household, accurately allow registration of demand for work directly on the NREGA Soft website and issue dated receipts, automatically calculate and pay unemployment allowance at 1/4th the wage rate, and pay for delay in disbursal of wages to workers.

The plea said that the lockdown and the subsequent closure of industries caused massive unemployment in urban areas and this led to large-scale reverse migration to the rural areas and demand for work under the NREGA, putting strain on the village economy.

It said according to government estimates, more than 32 lakh migrants returned to six states — Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. Some other estimates suggested that the figure was 45 lakh, the NGO submitted.

It cited a top court judgment in 2016 on Swaraj Abhiyan’s petition that non-payment of NREGA wages was a violation of Article 23 of the Constitution, which deals with forced labour and prohibition of trafficking.

In its verdict, the apex court had directed the Centre to ensure the payment of wages under the MGNREGA within 15 days and see to it that no beneficiary was deprived of food grains under the National Food Security Act.

Netflix Faces Loss Of Subscribers First Time In Over A Decade, Plans To Get Cheaper?

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 01:21 AM PDT

Popular streaming giant Netflix is planning to offer cheaper, ad-supported plans to users over the next year or two as the company aims to boost its subscriber base amid tough competition from rival platforms.

As per Mashable, Netflix has for the first time in over a decade reported a loss of subscribers. The company cited growing competition from other streaming launches by traditional entertainment companies, as well as password sharing, inflation and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine for the recent loss of paid subscriptions.

According to the company’s report to its shareholders, Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers globally and could lose more than 2 million subscriptions in the next quarter.

In an effort to lure more subscribers, Netflix is planning to introduce ad-supported plans to give customers more choice, the company’s co-chief executive Reed Hastings said on the earnings call, reported Variety.

The company is expecting to nail down its ad-supported streaming strategy over the next year or two, Hastings said, “but think of us as quite open to us offering even lower prices with advertising as a consumer choice.”

Hastings added, “Those that have followed Netflix know that I’ve been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription. But as much as I’m a fan of that, I’m a bigger fan of consumer choice. And allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant get what they want, makes a lot of sense.”

Hastings further said, “I don’t think we have a lot of doubt that [the ad model] works. I’m sure we’ll just get in and figure it out — as opposed to test it and maybe do it or not do it.”

However, Hastings didn’t provide details on what Netflix’s ad-supported plans might cost.

Last month, Netflix CFO Spencer Neumann signalled the streaming platform’s willingness to consider adopting an ad-supported tier.

“It’s not like we have religion against advertising, to be clear,” Neumann said at a Morgan Stanley investment conference. While “that’s not something that’s in our plans right now,” he said, “never say never.”

In December, Netflix introduced its most affordable monthly pricing plan to date in India, where individuals can subscribe to Netflix for as low as Rs 199. The company said it is “seeing nice growth” in a variety of markets including India.

Introducing ad-supported streaming plans for the users could give Netflix a new pathway to growth.

Hero Electric Partners With BOLT To Set Up 50,000 EV Charging Stations Across India

Disagreement Within Taliban After Pak Airstrikes In Afghanistan

Posted: 20 Apr 2022 12:01 AM PDT

Kabul [Afghanistan]: Fault lines within the Taliban came to the fore at a meeting convened to discuss the response to Pak airstrikes on Afghan soil that left more than 40 dead.

Pakistan struck the Afghan provinces of Khost and Kunar on Saturday, leaving more than 40 dead. Pak airstrikes prompted a series of protests across the country.

Protestors and authorities in Afghanistan said these strikes violated the country’s sovereignty.

While the Taliban Deputy Prime Minster Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar questioned Islamabad’s decision to carry out airstrikes inside the Afghan territory, Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoub, Deputy Defence Minister Mullah Fazl and the Chief of Army Staff Maulvi Fasihuddin Fitrat insisted on a stern response to Pakistan.

However, Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani and Higher Education Minister Abdul Baqi Haqqani maintained that Kabul should engage in a dialogue with Islamabad to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, Pakistan, claiming that seven Pakistan Army soldiers were killed in North Waziristan in an attack on April 14 carried out by terrorists operating from Afghanistan, asked the Taliban to secure the Pak-Afghanistan border region on their side and take action against those involved in terrorist activities against Pakistan.

Border skirmishes, airspace violations and artillery firing across the Durand Line have been on the rise in recent months.

Earlier, a Pakistan Army helicopter was shot at on April 7 by the Afghans along the Durand Line in Nimroz Province, while the Pak Military fired 56 artillery shells on April 14 across the border in Kunar and Nuristan Provinces.

Hemkund Sahib is a pilgrimage site in the Chamoli district. The site is visited by thousands of devotees from all over the globe every summer.

How A Smartphone Saved A Soldier’s Life In Ukraine

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 11:04 PM PDT

Kyiv [Ukraine]: A viral video on the internet of how a smartphone saved a soldier’s life. A Ukrainian soldier an be seen beating death by a whisker in this video.

It all took a smart phone to block the bullet to save the life of the soldier in the war-torn country. The viral video is among numerous instances of valour, and courage which have emerged from both sides while the war rages between Russia and Ukraine.

The Ukrainian soldier was shot at by Russian troops but he survived, and that was all because his phone took all the damage from the 7.62 mm bullet that had the soldier as its target. The bullet remained stuck in the phone.

The Ukrainian soldier shows his damaged phone with a stuck bullet in the viral video, saying “…smartphone saved my life”.

This video has come at a time when the war between Ukraine and Russia which has entered its second month is showing no signs of an end.

In the viral video, the soldier is seen talking to his fellow combatant, exultantly showing his mobile phone. The soldier apparently made the video while gunshots were heard as he animatedly spoke to his fellow combatant.

On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine after the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk requested help to defend them from intensifying attacks by Ukrainian troops.

Russia continues to argue that their “special operation” is targeting only Ukrainian military infrastructure and the civilian population is not the target.

The West, however, has rejected the Russian claims while imposing severe sanctions against Moscow.

Liverpool [UK]: Double strikes from Mohamed Salah and one goal each by Luis Diaz and Sadino Mane, helped Liverpool destroy Manchester United 4-0 on Wednesday.

Man United did not have the services of their star player Cristiano Ronaldo, as the Portuguese footballer missed the game due to the sudden demise of his newborn son.

Hosts Liverpool took an early lead in the fifth minute of the match when Luis Diaz scored for them. It was followed by Mohamed Salah giving his side a lead of 2-0 in the 22nd minute.

Resuming the game after the half-time, the hosts completely dominated the game as Sadio Mane scored a goal in the 68th minute. It was then that Salah put the final nail in the coffin and scored his second goal of the night in the 85th-minute taking Liverpool to victory 4-0.

No Plan To Impose Fine For Not Wearing Masks In Delhi

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 10:40 PM PDT

New Delhi [India]: The government is not planning to impose a fine for not wearing face masks in Delhi, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Tuesday while addressing media persons at Thyagaraj Stadium, during the launch ceremony of the Delhi Education Song (Delhi Shiksha Geet).

Clarifying on the decision to not impose fine for not wearing masks in Delhi, Sisodia mentioned, “We need to learn to live with Covid-19 as it will stay longer; we will take strict actions if the cases spike more.”

“As of now, there is no need to panic as there are lower counts in the cases, and a meeting has been scheduled with the experts and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on April 20, for knowing how do they see the ongoing Covid-19 situations,” he added.

However, the song launched by the Delhi government has been composed by Alok Srivastava and sung by Shaan and Sneha Shankar.

This is the first-ever education song from the national capital; it is intended to emphasise the need for education for society’s welfare.

Addressing the launch ceremony Sisodia said, “Everything that is written in the 68-page New Education Policy, we have mentioned in our song. The song contains the dreams that any parent would see for their child.”

Adding further, he said, “We intend to do something more than just fancy school buildings and great results. We want the children and their parents to listen to the song every morning so that they get to know the real idea and intention behind the song,” he added.

Chinese Hackers Target Indian Power Grid Assets In Ladakh

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:54 PM PDT

Massachusetts [US]: Chinese state-sponsored hackers had targeted India’s power grid assets in Ladakh possibly for information on India’s critical infrastructure or to prepare for sabotage in the future, according to the American cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.

This report, released earlier this month, details a campaign conducted by a likely Chinese state-sponsored threat activity group targeting the Indian power sector.

The activity was identified through a combination of large-scale automated network traffic analytics and expert analysis.

According to the report, this targeting is likely a long-term strategic priority for select Chinese state-sponsored threat actors active within India.

The prolonged targeting of Indian power grid assets by Chinese state-linked groups offers limited economic espionage or traditional intelligence-gathering opportunities.

“We believe this targeting is instead likely intended to enable information-gathering surrounding critical infrastructure systems or is pre-positioning for future activity,” the report said.

The objective for intrusions may include gaining an increased understanding of these complex systems in order to facilitate capability development for future use or gaining sufficient access across the system in preparation for future contingency operations.

In February 2021, Recorded Future’s Insikt Group reported on intrusion activity targeting operational assets within India’s power grid that it attributed to a likely Chinese state-sponsored threat activity group.

Following a short lull after the publication of RedEcho reporting, the American firm detected ongoing targeting of Indian power grid organisations by China-linked adversaries, frequently using the privately shared modular backdoor ShadowPad.

ShadowPad continues to be employed by an ever-increasing number of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Ministry of State Security (MSS)-linked groups, with its origins linked to known MSS contractors first using the tool in their own operations and later likely acting as a digital quartermaster.

In recent months, the American firm observed likely network intrusions targeting at least 7 Indian State Load Despatch Centres (SLDCs) responsible for carrying out real-time operations for grid control and electricity dispatch within these respective states.

Notably, this targeting has been geographically concentrated, with the identified SLDCs located in North India, in proximity to the disputed India-China border in Ladakh. One of these SLDCs was also targeted in previous RedEcho activity.

According to the report, this latest set of intrusions, however, is composed of an almost entirely different set of victim organisations.

In addition to the targeting of power grid assets, it also identified the compromise of a national emergency response system and the Indian subsidiary of a multinational logistics company by the same threat activity group.

“To achieve this, the group likely compromised and co-opted internet-facing DVR/IP camera devices for command and control (C2) of Shadowpad malware infections, as well as use of the open source tool FastReverseProxy (FRP),” the report said.

Despite a partial troop disengagement between India and China from February 2021, the prolonged targeting of Indian critical infrastructure continues to raise concerns over pre-positioning activity being conducted by Chinese adversaries.

While this latest activity displays targeting and capability consistencies with previously identified RedEcho activity, there are also some notable distinctions, the report added.

India’s Arjun Atwal Teams Up With Australia’s Lucas Herbert For PGA Tour

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:52 PM PDT

India’s veteran star Arjun Atwal is excited to tee up with Australia’s “young stud” Lucas Herbert in what will be his first PGA TOUR start in six months at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans starting on Thursday.

The 49-year-old Atwal will partner with the 26-year-old Herbert at TPC Louisiana in the only official FedExCup event to feature a two-player team format. A total of 80 teams (160 players) will compete for US$8.3 million, with the first and third rounds using the Four-Ball format and the second and final rounds using Foursomes (alternate shot). As India’s lone winner to date on the PGA TOUR – Atwal triumphed in the 2010 Wyndham Championship – he is presently preparing for life on PGA TOUR Champions (over-50 circuit) but the opportunity to play alongside Herbert, currently 46th in the world, was too enticing for him to pass over.

“I’ve been practising and working out,” said Atwal, who now lives in Orlando. Lucas is a member at Isleworth too, and I’ve gotten to know him pretty well. And since I haven’t played in a while, I thought it would be nice to play my way back in a team format with a young stud like him, he’s a really good player.”

Herbert found initial success on the DP World Tour by winning the 2020 Dubai Desert Classic and 2021 Irish Open before playing his way onto the PGA TOUR. He then earned his maiden PGA TOUR title by winning the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last October, which coincidently was Atwal’s last appearance on TOUR where he finished tied 71st.

While Atwal has kept himself fit in preparation for life in his 50s, he has continued to keep close tabs on compatriot, Anirban Lahiri who is currently the only Indian with a full playing card on the PGA TOUR. Atwal is also supporting his son, Krishen’s dream of trying to make it onto the NBA. The elder of his two boys will complete his post-grad year at South Kent School in Connecticut.

“I’m looking forward to turning 50. I’ll get enough starts out there on PGA TOUR Champions to do what I need to do,” said Atwal, who hits the half-century mark next March.

Six of the top-10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are also in the field, but only two of those players are teaming up; World No. 2 Collin Morikawa and World No. 4 Viktor Hovland will compete together for the highest-ranked pair in the history of the team format.

WB Violence: People Have Lost Faith In Police- Anirban Ganguly

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:39 PM PDT

New Delhi [India]: Amid the unabated violence in West Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) think tank member Anirban Ganguly supported demands for the CBI investigation into the recent rape cases, saying that the common people in the state have lost their faith in the police.

“The situation is such that every victim’s family wants a CBI investigation. We are seeing so many cases –Anees Khan case, the Rampurhat case, where people were charred to death, the Hashkhali rape case. They are all demanding the CBI investigations. People in West Bengal have lost faith in the police”, he said while speaking on the matter.

Ganguly further alleged the TMC of pressurising the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to not carry out the probes fairly.

He said, “The SIT is never successful in the investigations because TMC is pressurising them to not do the investigation properly.

In most of the cases, the TMC panchayat member, the municipality councillor and local leaders are involved.

They exploit the people on party orders. It is said that the SIT is investigating but in actuality they do nothing and the people have understood it now.”

A five-member fact-finding committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had previously submitted its report to party chief JP Nadda on March 30 on the incidents of arson in Rampurhat.

Nadda had formed a five-member fact-finding committee comprising West Bengal state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh DGP Brajlal, Lok Sabha MP and former Mumbai Police Commissioner Satya Pal Singh, Rajya Sabha MP and former IPS KC Ramamurty and BJP spokesperson and former IPS Bharati Ghosh.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government over the arson incident.

The move came after a nine-member delegation of BJP MPs from West Bengal met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought his intervention and action against the perpetrators involved in the crime.

As many as eight people were killed in the Rampurhat area of West Bengal’s Birbhum on Tuesday after a mob allegedly set houses on fire following the killing of TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe of the Birbhum violence case following the Calcutta High Court order.

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped in Hanskhali in Nadia district earlier this month.

The victim’s family has accused the son of a Trinamool Congress panchayat leader in the case. Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the Hanskhali rape case.

Karnataka CM Bommai Embarks On 3-Day Districts Tour

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:29 PM PDT

Bengaluru (Karnataka): Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will be on a 3-day districts tour here, beginning on Wednesday, as a part of the party’s ongoing state tour to assess the ground situation in preparations for the next year’s Assembly elections.

During the 3-day districts tour, the CM will take stock of the development works and also expedite the ongoing projects in the districts.

Speaking to the media, Bommai said, “I am on a three-day districts tour starting today and the focus would be development.”

Bhartiya Janata Party has set up three teams that will tour the state and hold conventions of district-level, booth-level party workers to assess the ground situation besides gathering feedback on the central and state government’s schemes.

The three teams led by BJP national general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh, state BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai started the tour on April 12.

Upon the demands of Cabinet expansion ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, he said that he will fly to Delhi when the party’s top brass will call him. Notably, Karnataka is scheduled to go to the polls next year.

Recently, Bommai visited the national capital.

During his two-day visit, he had met the party’s top brass, including the national president and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The cabinet expansion of the eight-month-old government has been stated to have been on the top agenda during the meeting.

Following the visit, CM said that the party high command will take a call on Cabinet expansion or reshuffle.

Bommai, while responding to the questions on the Hubli incident, said, “A thorough investigation is on into the Hubli incident. The culprits would be punished. Attacking the police station is an unpardonable crime. Stringent action would be taken in accordance with the law,” he said.

Oil Prices Tumble 5PC On Global Commodities Selloff After IMF Lowers Growth Forecasts

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:26 PM PDT

Crude oil prices fell 5 per cent Tuesday amid a selloff in global commodity markets after the International Monetary Fund slashed its world growth forecasts for 2022 and 2023, citing runaway fuel and food costs and other challenges from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Brent, the London-traded global benchmark for crude, settled down $5.91, or 5.2 per cent, at $107.25 per barrel. It plunged more than $6 earlier, hitting a session low of $106.81. New York-traded West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, the benchmark for US crude, settled down $5.65, or 5.2 per cent, at $102.56. The intraday low for WTI was $101.55.

Both crude benchmarks had gained about 15% over four previous days of trading as oil markets rallied on expectations of a further supply squeeze from Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

“With so much volatility in intraday oil prices, and extreme reactions to headline risks … I continue to expect that Brent will remain in a choppy $100 to $120 range, with WTI in a $95 to $115 range,” Jeffrey Halley, head of research for Australia and Asia-Pacific at online trading platform OANDA, said.

The International Energy Agency has warned that roughly 3 million barrels daily of Russian oil could be shut in from May onward due to sanctions, or buyers voluntarily shunning Russian cargoes.

Russian oil output has continued to slide in April, declining by 7.5 per cent in the first half of the month from March, the Interfax news agency reported on Friday.

World gross domestic product, or GDP, will likely expand by only 3.6% this year and next, the IMF said in an update of its World Economic Outlook published on Tuesday. That represented a downgrade of 0.8 percentage point and 0.2 percentage point, respectively, from the IMF’s previous GDP outlook published in December.
World growth rebounded by around 6.1 per cent in 2021 after a 4.9 per cent slump in 2020 caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

While the IMF revised down its GDP outlook, it raised its inflation expectations to an average of 5.7 per cent this year across advanced economies, and 8.7 per cent for emerging economies, citing inflation and other challenges from the Russia-Ukraine crisis. That was 1.8 points and 2.8 points higher, respectively, from the IMF’s previous inflation forecast.

“Economic damage from the conflict will contribute to a significant slowdown in global growth in 2022 and add to inflation,” the IMF said. “Fuel and food prices have increased rapidly, hitting vulnerable populations in low-income countries hardest.”
US bond markets sold off too on Tuesday amid fear of a recession in the United States as the Federal Reserve plans to fend off inflation with some of the most aggressive rate hikes in its history.

After slashing rates to nearly zero at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, the US central bank approved its first pandemic-era rate hike on March 16, raising rates by 25 basis points, or a quarter point. Many Federal Reserve officials have concluded since that the hike was too tame to rein in inflation galloping at 40-year highs.

The central bank is considering as many as seven rate adjustments this year and continuing them through 2023 until inflation drops to its target of 2% a year, from a current 8%. While most Federal Reserve officials are considering up to half point rate increases a month, James Bullard, the central bank’s head for its St. Louis division, has suggested a maximum three-quarter point increase to expedite the fight against inflation.

Bullard’s comments were one reason for Tuesday’s selloff in commodities, with gold dropping more than 1 per cent, copper 2 per cent and natural gas nearly 10 per cent after dollar, which determines pricing for most raw materials, hit two-year highs, impacting international demand for goods.

Johnny Depp Vows He Never ‘Struck Any Woman’ In His Life

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:23 PM PDT

In his defamation trial against former wife Amber Heard, actor Johnny Depp took the stand in a Fairfax, Virginia court, saying he has never “struck any woman” in his life.

“Truth is the only thing I’m interested in. Lies will get you nowhere, but lies build upon lies and build upon lies. I’m obsessed with the truth,” Depp said in the court on Tuesday.

During the testimony, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star acknowledged that he and Heard had arguments during their relationship but he never reached “the point of striking Ms Heard in any way nor have I ever struck any woman in my life,” CNN reported.

Depp and Heard were married in February 2015 and confirmed their split in May 2016.

After filing for divorce later that month, Heard filed a domestic violence restraining order against Depp and brought photographic evidence of the alleged abuse she suffered, as per US magazine.

Depp originally filed the USD 50 million lawsuit in March 2019, but it was postponed due to the pandemic. Back in November 2020, Depp lost his highly publicised U.K. libel lawsuit case against British tabloid The Sun for calling him a “wife-beater.”

In his latest trial, Depp also spoke about the beginning of his relationship with Heard.
“She was attentive. She was loving. She was smart. She was kind. She was funny. She was understanding,” he said.

He added that they shared a common interest in blues music and that Heard would often take his boots off when he returned home.

But within a year and a half, he said, “it was as if she had become another person almost.”

Depp’s testimony will continue on Wednesday. The trial is set to run through the end of May, and Heard will also have an opportunity to testify in her defence.

Eviction Drive In Violence Hit Jahangirpuri

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:14 PM PDT

New Delhi [India]: Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has scheduled an “encroachment removal action programme” and eviction drive, wherein illegal construction in the Jahangirpuri area will be removed on Wednesday and Thursday (April 20-21).

Jahangirpuri is the same area where clashes broke out during a religious procession.

NDMC has also asked for 400 personnel from the Delhi Police to “handle law and order” during the drive.

In a letter to the Northwest Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), the NDMC said, “The special joint encroachment removal action programme (eviction drive) comprising Public Works Department (PWD), local body, Police and the Works/Maintenance Department, Health Department, Sanitation Department, Veterinary Department and Enforcement Cell of North DMC is to be fixed in Jahangiripuri area.”

“You are, therefore requested to provide at least 400 police personnel including lady police/outer force for maintaining law and order during the encroachment removal action,” the letter further read.

An altercation between two groups erupted during a religious procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on April 16 that left nine people injured including eight police personnel and a civilian.

A total of 23 people have been arrested and two juveniles apprehended so far in connection with the incident.

On Tuesday, National Security Act (NSA) was imposed against five culprits involved in the clashes that took place in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri that erupted between members of two groups during a Hanuman Jayanti procession.

Meanwhile, in wake of the incident, the Delhi police are conducting drone surveillance to keep a vigil over the Central District.

Maharashtra Cyber Cell Proposes Removal Of 22 Accounts For Propagating Communal Disharmony

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 08:36 PM PDT

In wake of the recent incidents of communal clashes across India, the Maharashtra cyber cell has proposed to block 22 accounts on different social media for propagating communal disharmony.

Of these 22 accounts, 20 are on Twitter, while Instagram and Facebook have one each. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Maharashtra Cyber Cell Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjay Shintre said on observing the current atmosphere (of the country), 48 police stations under the department are actively filtering out accounts that post objectionable and defamatory content.

“Maharashtra Cyber has sent a proposal to block 22 accounts. Many have been blocked too…In the wake of the atmosphere at present, we started looking for accounts propagating communal disharmony content…” he said.

Shintre informed that several accounts on different social media belong to fake organisations and individuals who are using morphed photos, lots of editing and deep fake technology to spread communal disharmony.

Walking ANI through the process of removing accounts, the SP said, “We start with serving notices to intermediaries about the possibility of communal disharmony through such accounts. These intermediaries include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others. They act immediately by taking down such content and then deleting it.”

In the past two years, as per Shintre, the Maharashtra Cyber cell has identified about 12,000 objectionable posts defaming dignitaries, of which 6,000 were deleted by intermediaries.

“Although Maharashtra Cyber is active every day, in the last one month, considering the political developments, the cyber cell has been very proactive,” he added.

COVID-19: With Surge In Fresh Infections, China Logs 2,753 New Cases

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 08:27 PM PDT

Witnessing a surge in new COVID-19 cases, China on Tuesday reported 2,753 locally transmitted confirmed cases, the National Health Commission said on Wednesday.

Of these new locally transmitted cases, China’s economic hub Shanghai reported 2,494 cases and 16,407 local asymptomatic infections, Xinhua reported.

T

he current situation may mark the most significant challenge for the country — and, arguably, for Chinese leader Xi Jinping against zero Covid policy.

“We are providing more medical supplies to Ukraine in the coming days ahead,” Ravindra said.

The impact of the situation is being felt beyond the region with increasing food and energy costs, especially for many developing countries. It is in our collective interest to work constructively, both inside the United Nations and outside, towards seeking an early resolution to the issue.

India also noted the findings of Secretary-General’s Antonio Guterres’s Global Crisis Response Group Task Team issued last week and welcomed their recommendation for exempting purchases of food by World Food Programme (WFP) for humanitarian assistance from food export restrictions with immediate effect.

No Innocent Person Should Be Booked In Jahangirpuri Violence: National Minorities Panel

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:51 PM PDT

A National Commission for Minorities delegation led by chairperson Iqbal Singh Lalpura visited Delhi’s Jahangirpuri where clashes erupted between members of two groups and called upon the administration to ensure that no innocent person is booked in the matter.

The delegation also requested the administration to “quickly” nab the culprits of the violence. A clash between two groups erupted during a religious procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on April 16 that left nine people injured including eight police personnel and a civilian.

Appreciating the role of the district administration in containing the rising tension between the two communities, the Commission advised them to quickly nab all the culprits and take necessary steps so such incidents do not happen in future.
“No innocent person should be booked in this process,” they said.

The delegation took stock of the situation from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) North West.

As per the statement of the National Commission for Minorities, the delegation was informed that “the third procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti which did not have the permission was being organised by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP)/Bajrang Dal.”

There was a minor scuffle between two groups which later turned violent and police immediately rushed to the spot and controlled the situation, the statement said.
It was noted that eight of the nine persons injured during the incident were police personnel.

The Commission also had a joint meeting with representatives of both the communities and advised them to conduct Aman Committee meetings regularly.

On Tuesday, Delhi Police said that the situation in Jahangirpuri was peaceful and talks are being held with the Aman committee.

“The situation is peaceful. Talks were held with Aman Committee. The investigation is taking place in a fair manner,” Delhi Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dependra Pathak said.

A total of 23 people have been arrested and two juveniles apprehended so far in connection with the incident.

National Security Act (NSA) was imposed against five culprits involved in the clashes that took place in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri that erupted between members of two groups during a Hanuman Jayanti procession.

Meanwhile, in wake of the incident, the Delhi police are conducting drone surveillance to keep a vigil over the Central District.

Four Countries Including US Raise Concern Over Proposed Security Framework Between Solomon Islands, China

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:41 PM PDT

Officials from the United States, Australia, Japan and New Zealand on Tuesday (local time) expressed concerns about a proposed security framework between the Solomon Islands and China and its “serious risks to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

As per a White House statement, National Security Council Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink have convened a meeting in Honolulu with US Navy Adm. John C Aquilino, Commander, US Indo-Pacific Command and senior officials from Australia, Japan, and New Zealand on developments in the Pacific Islands on April 18. “In Honolulu, the officials reaffirmed the four countries’ enduring and shared commitment to the Pacific Islands,” a white House statement said.

According to the statement, the US resolved to intensify its engagement in the region to meet 21st-century challenges, from maritime security and economic development to the climate crisis and COVID-19.

“We will do this in ever-closer partnership with Pacific Island nations, including through a united Pacific Islands Forum; and together with like-minded countries, within and beyond the region, including in Europe,” the statement read further.

“Officials from the four countries represented also shared concerns about a proposed security framework between the Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and its serious risks to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” it added.

The meeting was part of regular and extensive US consultations with allies and partners on the Indo-Pacific and is part of the announced senior administration travel this week to Hawaii, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.

China and Solomon Islands on Tuesday (Beijing time) signed a framework agreement on security cooperation that neighbours of the South Pacific archipelago fear could open the door to a Chinese naval base in the country.

Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that the two countries had formally signed a framework pact on security cooperation.

Australia said that China has intentions to build a naval base in the Solomon Islands to intimidate the continent.

The United States last week expressed concern over the security pact between China and the Solomon Islands, saying this agreement will open the door for the deployment of Chinese military forces to the Pacific nation.

“We believe that signing such an agreement could actually increase destabilisation within the Solomon Islands and could set a concerning precedent for the wider Pacific Island region,” Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby told a press briefing.

US Preparing To Announce Another Military Aid Package For Ukraine

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:31 PM PDT

The United States is expected to announce that it will provide a new military aid package to Ukraine this week for the ongoing war between Moscow and Kyiv, Sputnik News Agency reported citing US media on Tuesday (local time).

The new package will be similar in size to the latest one worth USD 800 million and will include both more artillery and tens of thousands of artillery rounds, the report said, citing Biden administration officials. Earlier, US President Joe Biden had said that his administration will provide Ukraine with an additional 800 million US dollars’ worth of military aid including heavy artillery as Washington anticipated a “wider assault” by Russia in eastern Ukraine.

“The United States will continue to provide Ukraine with the capabilities to defend itself,” Biden said in a statement after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Will contain many of the highly effective weapons systems we have already provided and new capabilities tailored to the wider assault we expect Russia to launch in eastern Ukraine,” Biden had said.

“These new capabilities include artillery systems, artillery rounds and armored personnel carriers. I have also approved the transfer of additional helicopters,” he said, adding that the United States will continue to facilitate the transfer of significant capabilities from its allies and partners around the world.

The United States has committed 1.7 billion dollars in security assistance to Ukraine since Russia began its “special military operation”.

However, White House on Monday (local time) said that President Biden has no plans to visit Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“There are no plans for the President to go,” White House spokesperson Jen Psaki has said.

She also has informed that Washington has sent four planes loaded with security assistance to Ukraine over the weekend and made one more delivery on Monday.
The United States remains the largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine.

Washington has committed more than USD 3.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. Approximately USD 2.6 billion of the total amount was approved since the beginning of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine at the end on February, according to the Defense Department.

On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine after the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk requested help to defend them from intensifying attacks by Ukrainian troops.

India Among Countries To Have Fulfilled Most Paris Commitments, Says Sitharaman

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:15 PM PDT

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said India is one of the six countries to have fulfilled most of the commitments made at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 and remains committed to fulfilling its renewable energy targets.

Sitharaman made the remarks while answering a question during a panel discussion at the Atlantic Council, a US-based think tank. “We are one of the six countries who have fulfilled most of the commitments made in Paris,” Sitharaman said.

“One calculation we had in our mind was the transition would be filled with natural gas, that the transition will be enabled by natural gas. But unfortunately, what has happened, because of the recent developments is not only that the crude, a fossil fuel from which we want to move out, has shot up, (but) natural gas, which is a transition fuel we wanted even that’s gone up and it’s also in short supply,” she added.

She was asked if India’s commitment to its environmental goals has changed in light of recent geopolitical disturbances as a result of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The Finance Minister elaborated that the use of natural gas has been spread throughout the country with government schemes like ‘Ujjwala Yojna’.

“So when the price of such a fuel which is a transition fuel goes skyrocketing, your calculations get upset,” Sitharaman said.

Talking about India’s transition from coal, Sitharaman said that given the recent developments, the timeline of India reducing its dependence on coal will be “challenged”.

“So your dependence on coal will ideally be coming down and if we pegged the coming down to a certain period, now because of the transition gas becoming much more in price and availability becoming a bit difficult, the dependence on coal and the speed with which we wanted to get out of it will be challenged… so that’s what is the big problem before us,” Sitharaman said.

Talking about India’s future commitments, Sitharaman made it clear that India’s commitment to achieving its environmental goals remains even as the timeline under which the transition would take place would have to be “relooked”.

“Our commitments will be fulfilled as regards renewable energy… our commitments to refashion our energy basket remains intact, but I suppose the time that it’s going to take (will) probably have to be relooked. However, the commitments made by our PM in COP26 in Scotland is something we have taken seriously, and we are moving forward to fulfilling it,” she said.

Sitharaman talked about the Indian economy, the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the welfare schemes of the government and India’s recovery plan from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic during the almost an hour-long session.

Sitharaman is in Washington on an official visit to attend the Spring Meetings at the World Bank, the G20 Finance Ministers meeting and the Central Bank Governor Meeting (FMCBG).

The visit will also include several bilateral interactions, including with Indonesia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and South Africa as well as a high-level meeting with World Bank President David Malpass.

Jahangirpuri Violence: National Security Act Imposed Against 5 Culprits

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 08:45 AM PDT

National Security Act (NSA) was on Tuesday imposed against five culprits involved in the clashes that took place in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri that erupted between members of two groups during a Hanuman Jayanti procession on April 16, top government officials said.

NSA has been imposed against Ansar, Salim, Imam Sheikh alias Sonu, Dilshad and Ahir for their involvement in the Jahangirpuri violence, officials said. The action was taken a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana to take strict action over Jahangirpuri violence.

Shah had given his direction in a telephonic conversation with Asthana followed by a report presented before him by senior Delhi Police officials on the incident.
On Saturday, the Home Minister also talked to Asthana and Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Depender Pathak over the incident and asked them to maintain law and order.

The situation turned tense in the north-west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri soon after stone-pelting and chaos ensued following clashes between members of two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in the evening.

The FIR, registered on the complaint filed by a police officer at the Jahangirpuri police station, mentions that there was a peaceful Shobha Yatra procession to mark Hanuman Jayanti and an argument escalated. It led to stone-pelting.

Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Monday informed in a press briefing that 14 teams of police are investigating the Jahangirpuri violence case.
So far, 21 people have been arrested and two juveniles detained in connection with the incident that left nine people injured including eight police personnel and one civilian.

The Delhi Police Commissioner said that a close watch was being maintained on the social media platforms and assured legal action against those attempting to spread misinformation.

Four teams of forensics examined the spot today. 14 teams of police are investigating the case from different angles. The investigation is in the initial phase. A total of 21 people were arrested and some others are on remand,” Asthana told ANI on Monday.
A total of 14 accused in the case were produced before the Rohini court on Sunday, which sent two prime accused – Ansar and Aslam – to police custody for a day. The remaining 12 were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

“We are monitoring social media closely, and legal action will be taken against those who are found spreading misinformation,” Asthana said when asked about reports that flags were installed at a mosque. Three firearms and five swords have been recovered from the possession of the accused persons, said police.

“As of now, three firearms recovered. A forensic examination will be done on the recovery. Restrictions in the Jahangirpuri area were imposed to create a sense of safety. The police deployment will be decreased after the situation gets better,” the Delhi CP said.

On the violent clashes, the Delhi top cop said, “An altercation between the two groups erupted, now what was the altercation and why it happened, saying anything on this before concluding the investigation will not be right.”

On Monday, Ravindra Yadav, Special Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch informed that the Delhi Police Crime Branch and the district police are jointly probing the incident.

IMF Slashes India’s Growth Forecast For FY23 To 8.2%

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 08:13 AM PDT

Washington [US]: The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday slashed India’s growth forecast for the current financial year 2022-23 (FY23) to 8.2 per cent from its earlier estimate of 9 per cent in January.

However, as per the projections of India’s growth forecast for this fiscal year, India will be the fastest-growing major economy in the world.

Further, the IMF, in a statement, said that economic damage from the war in Ukraine will contribute to a significant slowdown in global growth in 2022 and add to inflation.

“Global growth is projected to slow from an estimated 6.1 per cent in 2021 to 3.6 per cent in 2022 and 2023.

According to the IMF, beyond 2023, global growth is forecast to decline to about 3.3 per cent over the medium term.

Shanghai Uproar Amidst Lockdown, Treatment Delays

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:37 AM PDT

Beijing [China]: Shanghai is facing major uproar, amidst high number of new cases being reported on a daily basis.

Shanghai reported a new high of 21,000 new cases of COVID testing on 8th April, as the city’s 26 million inhabitants remained under lockdown and other Chinese cities increased restrictions- even in regions where no fresh infections have occurred.

After failing to isolate COVID, Beijing officials intervened in Shanghai to calm uproar, closing the city down in phases, and insisting that the country sticks to its zero-tolerance policy to save its medical system from collapsing.

The megacity is struggling to suppress the Omicron, as well as rising public dissatisfaction with quarantine policies.

People with long-term conditions or who require extensive care are going without treatment as a result of the government’s stringent stance on regulating the coronavirus.

Recently, a popular article on Chinese social media documented the death of a lady at a Shanghai rehabilitation centre.

The patient named Li Chang is a Tsinghua University alumnus and mother of two who required 24-hour care after suffering a brain haemorrhage last year.

Her care staff was compelled to quarantine in late March, as per social media posts, after several people at the institution tested positive for COVID-19.

Her friends and family were forbidden from responding to her needs, and she died just a few days later.

In a now-deleted piece on her WeChat site, Xu Liyuan, a writer and former journalist, lamented Li Chang’s death. Xu subsequently stated that she removed the post because Li’s family requested not to publish about their relative’s death.

Weibo is again swamped with posts asking for assistance for those suffering from chronic illnesses including kidney disease, TB, and cancer, as it was during past lockdowns.

An article about cancer sufferers in Shanghai was also published on Dxy.cn, an online medical information site that gained a lot of traction.

COVID-19 is one of the hundreds of fatal illnesses that exist in the world. People across the social media network are pleading with the administration to enable all patients to get the same critically needed, medical care.

There are hundreds of thousands of cases in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Jilin, according to a deleted Zhihu article that echo the uproar and criticism of the zero-COVID policy while mocking ultranationalists who support severe quarantine restrictions.

Several individuals have died because of the virus, counting both symptomatic and asymptomatic instances.

As per the post “Lockdown Enthusiasts” are so fond of using the preservation of people’s lives to defend the policy, the post even taunted and questioned these people for a definite number of persons who died during the latest wave.

Despite outrage and uproar in Shanghai, Chinese news channels have remained mute on tales regarding medical care shortages or medical system failures throughout the lockdown.

A Shanghai East Hospital nurse died of an asthma attack three weeks ago after being refused treatment at her own hospital.

Thousands of outraged comments flooded the internet in response to the report.

Caixin, one of the few Chinese news sites to cover the event, had its piece removed after it was published.

A story alleging terrible working conditions for substitute orderlies at Shanghai’s Donghai Elderly Care Hospital was also published by Sixth Tone but then subsequently removed.

Because detailed documentation is scarce, comparable occurrences are frequently shared online via pictures and videos, the veracity of which is impossible to verify.

Another now-deleted WeChat blog post claimed that a doctor in Heilongjiang Province committed suicide after being penalised for doing surgery on a patient who was COVID-19 positive without his knowledge.

A recent WeChat article by the Signal News, which was shortly suppressed, appears to give additional information on Dr Shi Jun’s situation.

The author claims that the patient in question used her nucleic acid test results, which were negative at the time; that Dr Shi was a well-respected surgeon who was vital to his hospital’s neurosurgery department; and that news of his suicide has been heavily censored on the Chinese social media and the internet.

Given the stress of the lengthy lockdown and acute shortages of food, drugs, and medical services, it’s unsurprising that emotions are running high.

Two additional stories about Shanghai lockdowns have stirred outrage, each for different reasons.

The first is a social media post from Shanghai’s Sixth People’s Hospital about a male expatriate who underwent a successful operation at the hospital after suffering from an erection that lasted more than fifty hours. Angry internet users wondered why a privileged foreigner would be given such preferential care considering the limited medical resources available.

The controversy over the medically legitimate operation took place on March 2nd before the worst of the Omicron crisis hit the country. The hospital’s message after the surgery also appears to be part of a typical social media promotion of the work of its different medical divisions, of which the urology unit is just one.

The second example is about the massive public outcry over images and video of a pet corgi being beaten to death by a white-suited pandemic worker on a Shanghai street after its owner was brought into quarantine. There were two pieces written, which are available on the subject.

In the first, “A Corgi Was Killed on the Streets of Shanghai,” the author recalls his childhood in the country, where he describes the loving companionship of pet dogs and compares it with the merciless treatment of China’s urban pets during pandemic lockdowns nowadays. An apt quotation from Lu Xun appears in the essay”When the brave are angry, they turn their swords on the stronger; when the cowardly are angry, they turn their swords on the weaker.”

The second piece, “The Casual Murdering of a Corgi,” argues that killing pets during a pandemic is cruel, useless, and perhaps unlawful. The author also compares the treatment of cats and dogs in Shanghai with the care of animals in war-torn Ukraine, praising the compassion with which Ukrainian people, refugees, and the military treat their pets. The essay concludes with “In 2022, we cannot rely on laws, policies, or the kindness of others to protect our pets. We can only rely on ourselves.”

Tour Operators To Reach Over 70% Of Pre-COVID Levels This Fiscal

Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:04 AM PDT

New Delhi [India]: The Indian tours operators could see revenue increase this fiscal to over 70 per cent of the pre-COVID (fiscal 2019-20) level, riding on high pent-up demand and increasing confidence of people to travel as the pandemic risks wane, CRISIL Ratings said on Tuesday.

While full recovery to the pre-pandemic level is expected only by the financial year 2023-24, continuing recovery with improved operating profitability, supported by cost-control measures, and healthy liquidity will support credit profiles from here, it said.

The industry, which provides services such as air/bus ticketing and hotels/packages for both leisure and corporate travel within India and abroad, has taken the severest beating from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Post the initial shock of the pandemic in the first half of fiscal 2021, which brought the entire industry to a standstill, tours operators witnessed gradual recovery in the second half, with improving air traffic and demand for short domestic holidays.

In the first quarter of 2021-22, however, the severe second wave of the pandemic slammed the brakes on recovery, that too in the peak travel season of summer, tamping revenue down to less than 20 per cent of the pre-pandemic level.

The third quarter of fiscal 2022 saw the industry make healthy recovery as the second wave abated, taking revenue up to 60 per cent of the pre-pandemic level on the back of high pent-up demand. Air traffic reached around 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels during the third quarter, led by domestic traffic, CRISIL Ratings said in a report.

“High pent-up demand, eased restrictions, and higher consumer confidence are expected to drive recovery in domestic travel to over 80 per cent of the pre-pandemic level.

Corporate travel should also rebound to over 70 per cent, as corporates increasingly resume work from office.

However, segments such as outbound and inbound travel should see a more gradual recovery as restrictions in other countries ease gradually,” said Naveen Vaidyanathan, Director, CRISIL Ratings.

Other banks are also likely to increase their lending rates in the coming days. of high pent-up demand.
