Delhi on Wednesday reported 1,009 fresh cases, the highest since February 10, while the positivity rate is 5.70 per cent. The top expert believes that there are eight variants of Omicron and amongst them, one is dominating which can be held responsible for the surge in cases. Speaking to ANI, Dr SK Sarin, Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) said that there is a possibility of new variants of Omicron in Delhi while adding that the samples at the ILBS lab have been sequenced. “There is a possibility that new variants are emerging of the Omicron and they are being sequenced,” said Dr Sarin. Dr Sarin further said that there are eight variants of Omicron and amongst them, one is dominating. “I think by today at our institute ILBS many samples have been sequenced and I think there are eight variants of which one is now dominating, we will come to know slowly,” he told ANI. According to the sources to ANI, BA.2.12.1 is the variant which is a sibling of Omicron and is also responsible for the sudden surge in Delhi. Dr Sarin warned and said that people need to be careful. “I would suggest people should be very careful. There is a fear that children may get infected because they are not adequately vaccinated. People must wear masks,” he added. Since the beginning of April, India has been continuously registering a rise in COVID cases daily. | Naqvi Slams Politicisation Over Jahangirpuri Violence, Demolition Drive Posted: 21 Apr 2022 03:24 AM PDT Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday launched attack on the opposition leaders who blamed the BJP-led government after bulldozers rolled into Jahangirpuri for a demolition. saying that leaders should understand that “the issue is not about bulldozer rolled for demolition but is to stop the rebellion and the rebels.” After bulldozers rolled into Jahangirpuri for a demolition drive by North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) on Wednesday morning, the political mercury has been increasing. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and other leaders have been constantly attacking BJP led government after bulldozers rolled into Jahangirpuri for a demolition. Earlier on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi sneered at BJP’s move to start an encroachment drive in Jahangirpuri and said that the bulldozers must be used to end hatred among people. “This is demolition of India’s constitutional values. This is state-sponsored targeting of the poor and minorities. BJP must bulldoze the hatred in their hearts instead,” tweeted Gandhi. Responding to the opposition, Union Minister said, “Whether it’s Rahul Gandhi or all political creatures, they should understand that the issue is not a bulldozer rolled for demolition, but is to stop the rebellion and the rebels.” Naqvi counter-attacked on the opposition and said, “They (opposition) are trying to create confusion. Some people became used to creating confusion in the name of secularism and communism and to create an atmosphere of fear. I will advise them that ‘Provoking should not be a priority but Peace should be.” He further said that “They are trying to make a communal shield in this and sending a message to the whole world that the minority is unsafe here in the country. This is being done under a very well-planned conspiracy.” While responding to TMC sending a fact-finding committee from West Bengal for information on the Jahangirpuri violence case, Naqvi said that it would have been better if the team goes to Birbhum where the massacre is happening instead of sending the team here. |

Congratulating the country on the feat, Putin said, “Block off this industrial area so that not even a fly can escape.” “Mariupol has been liberated,” Shoigu told Putin during a televised meeting. “The remaining nationalist formations took refuge in the industrial zone of the Azovstal plant.” Shoigu said around 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers remained inside the plant, where the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance has been sheltering, using the facility’s network of underground tunnels. There, residents forbidden to leave the confines of their apartments or housing blocks for weeks have been desperate for food and freedom — some seen in social media clips screaming out of their windows in frustration or clashing with hazmat-clad workers, reported CNN. The current situation may mark the most significant challenge for the country — and, arguably, for Chinese leader Xi Jinping against zero Covid policy. Some cities have discouraged their residents from leaving, like the major southern port of Guangzhou, which requires its 18 million people to show a negative COVID test if they want to get out. Moreover, the zero-covid policy has sparked mounting frustration and anger in Shanghai and threatens more disruption amplifying the risks for the Communist Party. |

| Bengal Means Blood: Suvendu Adhikari Counters Business Summit’s Theme Posted: 20 Apr 2022 07:08 PM PDT BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday equated West Bengal with “blood”, referring to the incidents of post-poll violence in the state, and said that it is not a Bengal for business, as the Bengal global business summit intends to showcase. Adhikari’s comment comes in contradiction with Bengal Global Business Summit’s theme “Bengal Means Business”. As per the official website of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), the sixth edition of the business congregation this year intends to “showcase the world that ‘Bengal Means Business’ and to explore more business opportunities, forge partnership and collaboration.” Slamming Banerjee who laid out the eight-pillar strategy for the development of the state as a global hub for business, the Leader of Opposition said that “syndicate raj” prevails in the state, leaving no space for industries to flourish. “…Can’t have industries in Bengal, land policy is bad. There is syndicate raj here, be it coal…This is not Bengal for business, but Bengal for blood, and Bengal for ‘Birbhum bomb’,” he told ANI. Earlier this month, the police had recovered crude bombs in a plastic bag near a football ground in Birbhum’s Sikandarpur village. The crude bombs were recovered at a time when the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the violence at Bogtui village in which at least eight people including two children were charred to death. Following the Birbhum violence, West Bengal police had carried out raids to recover arms and ammunition from across the state. On being asked whether he received the invitation to the Bengal global business summit, Adhikari said that the Opposition has no recognition in the state, and alleged that the state government is “for the family, by the family”. “No question of invitation…LoP in Bengal has no recognition. The system is such that it’s for the family, by the family, and of the ‘Kalighat Banerjee family’…” he said. The two-day ‘Bengal Global Business Summit’ began at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata on Wednesday. |

| IPL 2022: Delhi Capitals Beat Punjab Kings By 9-Wickets Posted: 20 Apr 2022 05:52 PM PDT Bowlers played a key role for Delhi Capitals as they bundled out Punjab Kings for 115 and their batters too pitched in strongly, chasing the target in inside 11 overs in the IPL match at Brabourne Stadium here on Wednesday. Punjab King’s 115 is the lowest total by any team so far in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2022. The total was chased by DC with 57 balls to spare as the team boosted their NRR (Net Run Rate). Capitals never looked in trouble throughout the match as they inflicted a heavy nine-wicket defeat on Punjab Kings. Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed and Lalit Yadav scalped two wickets each for DC while Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman picked one. Among batters, David Warner remained not out on 60 while Prithvi Shaw played a quick knock of 41. For Punjab Kings, no batter was able to leave his mark. Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma and skipper Mayank Agarwal top-scored with knocks of 32 and 24 respectively. Rahul Chahar scalped the lone wicket of Shaw in the match for Punjab. The only way for Punjab Kings to make a match of their total was by picking few early wickets. But, instead, it was carnage from Shaw and Warner. The pair recorded their fourth consecutive 50 plus opening stand and reached the landmark in just 3.3 overs. Earlier, put in to bat first, Punjab Kings had a bad start as they amassed 47 runs with the loss of three wickets in the first six overs. In the fourth over, Lalit Yadav struck to remove Shikhar Dhawan. Veteran opener tried to paddle the wide of leg delivery but the ball teased the bat and the catch was taken by the keeper. Mustafizur Rahman removed PBKS skipper Mayank Agarwal in the very next over. And in the last over of the powerplay, Axar Patel dismissed in-form batter, Liam Livingstone. In the 7th over, Khaleel Ahmed also joined the wicket-taking party as he sent Jonny Bairstow back into the pavilion. Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan then tried to rebuild the innings for Punjab in the middle overs. The 31-run partnership finally came to an end after Axar Patel struck to remove Jitesh Sharma in the 13th over. Patel bowled a full-length ball to which Jitesh Sharma played a sweep shot and missed the ball which hit him in his pads resulting in LBW. In the next over, Kuldeep Yadav also joined the wicket-taking DC bowlers as he removed Kagiso Rabada and Nathan Ellis to put more misery on PBKS. In the 15th over, Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Shah Rukh Khan for his second wicket of the night. Brief Scores: Punjab Kings 115/10 (Jitesh Sharma 32, Mayank Agarwal 24; Axar Patel 2-10) vs Delhi Capitals (David Warner 60*, Prithvi Shaw 41; Rahul Chahar 1-21). |

| Supplying Arms To Ukraine Does Not Make Germany Party To Conflict: Foreign Minister Posted: 20 Apr 2022 08:22 AM PDT Germany supports the countries of Eastern Europe in supplying Soviet-made weapons to Ukraine amid Russia’s special military operation, but believes that such deliveries do not make the country a party to the conflict, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Wednesday. “We support those partners who can promptly supply Soviet-made weapons. In this case, we guarantee compensation [for the weapons] so these countries can deliver supplies quickly. At the same time, I want to make it clear that we, in the government, are unanimous that supplies of weapons will not make us a party to the conflict,” Baerbock said at a press conference in Riga, broadcast by the German Foreign Ministry. On February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine after the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk appealed for help in defending themselves against Ukrainian forces. The Russian Defense Ministry said the special operation is targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only. Moscow has repeatedly stressed that it has no plans to occupy Ukraine. Western countries had been arming Ukraine for months prior to the Russian operation. Ukraine has now asked the European Union and the United States for more weapons, including air defense and anti-missile systems, fighters, mortars, and automatic weapons. |
| Increased Connectivity Between India, Vietnam To Boost Economies Of Both Countries: Om Birla Posted: 20 Apr 2022 05:38 AM PDT Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday said that the new and increased connectivity between Vietnam and India will generate business and tourism opportunities, which will boost the economies of both countries. Birla’s remarks came as he, along with Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Vuong Dinh Hue, restored the suspended direct air services between the two countries after the COVID-19 pandemic and also inaugurated air services on new routes, giving a new dimension to air services between two countries. Before the outbreak of the pandemic, Vietnamese airline VietJet was operating regular flights from Hanoi and Ho Chin Minh City to New Delhi. Apart from this, Charter flights were also being operated to the major Buddhist spiritual centre Bodh Gaya. However, the services that were suspended after the pandemic struck, have now been resumed during the visit of Birla. The two existing services between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and New Delhi will resume on April 29 and April 30. Additionally, four new routes will connect Hanoi-Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City-Mumbai and the southern resort island of Phu Quoc with New Delhi and Mumbai. Vietjet Air will operate four roundtrip flights each week on the HCM City-Mumbai route from June 2 and three weekly round-trip flights on the Hanoi-Mumbai route from June 3. | COVID-19: Top Scientist Believes Surge In Cases Will Not Lead To Fourth Wave Posted: 20 Apr 2022 05:17 AM PDT Even as some of the States and Union Territories are seeing a significant rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, the top scientist believes that the surge in infection will not lead to the fourth wave by any chance. Speaking to ANI, the former Chief Scientist of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr R Gangakhedkar said that India has sublineages of the Omicron variant but no new variant has been reported so far and the chances of the fourth wave can’t be seen as of now. “I don’t think this is the fourth wave by any chance. One thing we have to understand is that the entire world continues to have BA.2 variants, which is infecting people every day,” he said. He further elaborated that due to the opening of schools and colleges, the people have become socially active resultantly the surge in cases is being witnessed. “The second issue is that we have allowed the schools to open as well as the college students are moving now. The result is now that they are out in the open, they are getting infected and clusters of those infections can be sizable mainly because of social networks,” said Dr Gangakhedkar. According to Dr Gangakhedkar, “The withdrawal of the use of masks is also the reason for the surge in cases. It is also true that some of us still have misunderstood the mandatory use of masks, which has been withdrawn. Some of us may be presuming that there is no fear of acquiring any infection so I can move freely and they have stopped using the mask and therefore, they also get infected if they come in contact with somebody who’s infected as of now.” “So essentially this kind of a reaction when you relax the lockdown is more likely to come and we may see a smaller surge,” he added while cautioning against removing masks. He also said that infection from Omicron is going to persist for six to nine months and recombinant variants are an accident that will not lead to the fourth wave. “The last thing which we have to remember is when we talk in terms of these newer variants, which are coming BA.4, BA.5 from South Africa, and the recombinant variants that are coming, there are two factors which will have proven that all these variants continue to belong to Omicron family. So whatever protection that natural infection has given to us is likely to persist for a longer period. It could be about six to nine months’ time. And it is also important to remember at recombinant variants, by and large, do not live longer to spread the infection because recombination events are an accident. And that’s not the natural evolution of the virus. So we need not worry in terms of the emergence of the fourth wave,” he added. Since the beginning of April, India has been continuously registering a rise in COVID cases daily. However, on Monday, the country recorded about a 90 per cent jump with 2,183 cases. |

| Tesla Resumes Operations At Shanghai Plant In China Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:59 AM PDT US electric carmaker Tesla has resumed production at its plant in China’s Shanghai after the local authorities had issued a guideline on relaunching business operation following a massive COVID-19 outbreak in the city, a senior plant official said on Wednesday. “We will ramp up the output over the next three to four days to resume one-shift production,” Song Gang, a director of manufacturing at the Tesla plant in Shanghai, said, as quoted by China Daily. Production of car batteries and electrical equipment resumed on Tuesday, as about 8,000 workers returned to the factory on Sunday and Monday, according to the report. Tesla’s suppliers of spare parts based in Shanghai, as well as neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, have resumed supplies as well, Song said. Last week, Tesla denied media reports that the production pause at the Shanghai plant due to the COVID-19 lockdown will continue until mid-May. The plant in Shanghai was Tesla’s first outside the United States, with more than half of the electric vehicles produced there shipped to Europe and Asian countries last year. China itself is one of Tesla’s key markets. On March 28, Shanghai’s population of 25 million was put under lockdown in connection with a new outbreak of coronavirus cases. Originally planned to last until April 5, it was later extended indefinitely due to the high incidence of COVID-19 infections. |
| Mamata Banerjee ‘Most Suited’ Opposition Candidate For 2024 PM Post: Ripun Bora Posted: 20 Apr 2022 03:50 AM PDT Veteran politician and TMC leader Ripun Bora on Wednesday said that the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banarjee is the “most suitable” opposition candidate for Prime Minister’s post in the 2024 Lok Sabha General election because she is fighting alone aggressively against BJP. Even after the becoming Chief Minister, in the past one year, she have been trying without any break to unite all opposition right from KCR to Sharad Pawar to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and holding meetings to unite for one opposition front.” “Considering all this ground reality my personal opinion is that Mamta Banerjee would be the best-suited candidate for the opposition Prime Minister candidate in 2024”, he further added. Former Senior Congress leader Ripun had on April 17 joined TMC in Kolkata and alleged that the Congress party from grassroots to top-level was fighting among each other instead of fighting against the BJP. |

| Netflix Faces Loss Of Subscribers First Time In Over A Decade, Plans To Get Cheaper? Posted: 20 Apr 2022 01:21 AM PDT Popular streaming giant Netflix is planning to offer cheaper, ad-supported plans to users over the next year or two as the company aims to boost its subscriber base amid tough competition from rival platforms. As per Mashable, Netflix has for the first time in over a decade reported a loss of subscribers. The company cited growing competition from other streaming launches by traditional entertainment companies, as well as password sharing, inflation and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine for the recent loss of paid subscriptions. According to the company’s report to its shareholders, Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers globally and could lose more than 2 million subscriptions in the next quarter. In an effort to lure more subscribers, Netflix is planning to introduce ad-supported plans to give customers more choice, the company’s co-chief executive Reed Hastings said on the earnings call, reported Variety. The company is expecting to nail down its ad-supported streaming strategy over the next year or two, Hastings said, “but think of us as quite open to us offering even lower prices with advertising as a consumer choice.” Hastings added, “Those that have followed Netflix know that I’ve been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription. But as much as I’m a fan of that, I’m a bigger fan of consumer choice. And allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant get what they want, makes a lot of sense.” Hastings further said, “I don’t think we have a lot of doubt that [the ad model] works. I’m sure we’ll just get in and figure it out — as opposed to test it and maybe do it or not do it.” However, Hastings didn’t provide details on what Netflix’s ad-supported plans might cost. Last month, Netflix CFO Spencer Neumann signalled the streaming platform’s willingness to consider adopting an ad-supported tier. “It’s not like we have religion against advertising, to be clear,” Neumann said at a Morgan Stanley investment conference. While “that’s not something that’s in our plans right now,” he said, “never say never.” In December, Netflix introduced its most affordable monthly pricing plan to date in India, where individuals can subscribe to Netflix for as low as Rs 199. The company said it is “seeing nice growth” in a variety of markets including India. Introducing ad-supported streaming plans for the users could give Netflix a new pathway to growth. |

| India’s Arjun Atwal Teams Up With Australia’s Lucas Herbert For PGA Tour Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:52 PM PDT India’s veteran star Arjun Atwal is excited to tee up with Australia’s “young stud” Lucas Herbert in what will be his first PGA TOUR start in six months at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans starting on Thursday. The 49-year-old Atwal will partner with the 26-year-old Herbert at TPC Louisiana in the only official FedExCup event to feature a two-player team format. A total of 80 teams (160 players) will compete for US$8.3 million, with the first and third rounds using the Four-Ball format and the second and final rounds using Foursomes (alternate shot). As India’s lone winner to date on the PGA TOUR – Atwal triumphed in the 2010 Wyndham Championship – he is presently preparing for life on PGA TOUR Champions (over-50 circuit) but the opportunity to play alongside Herbert, currently 46th in the world, was too enticing for him to pass over. “I’ve been practising and working out,” said Atwal, who now lives in Orlando. Lucas is a member at Isleworth too, and I’ve gotten to know him pretty well. And since I haven’t played in a while, I thought it would be nice to play my way back in a team format with a young stud like him, he’s a really good player.” Herbert found initial success on the DP World Tour by winning the 2020 Dubai Desert Classic and 2021 Irish Open before playing his way onto the PGA TOUR. He then earned his maiden PGA TOUR title by winning the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last October, which coincidently was Atwal’s last appearance on TOUR where he finished tied 71st. While Atwal has kept himself fit in preparation for life in his 50s, he has continued to keep close tabs on compatriot, Anirban Lahiri who is currently the only Indian with a full playing card on the PGA TOUR. Atwal is also supporting his son, Krishen’s dream of trying to make it onto the NBA. The elder of his two boys will complete his post-grad year at South Kent School in Connecticut. “I’m looking forward to turning 50. I’ll get enough starts out there on PGA TOUR Champions to do what I need to do,” said Atwal, who hits the half-century mark next March. Six of the top-10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are also in the field, but only two of those players are teaming up; World No. 2 Collin Morikawa and World No. 4 Viktor Hovland will compete together for the highest-ranked pair in the history of the team format. |

| WB Violence: People Have Lost Faith In Police- Anirban Ganguly Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:39 PM PDT New Delhi [India]: Amid the unabated violence in West Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) think tank member Anirban Ganguly supported demands for the CBI investigation into the recent rape cases, saying that the common people in the state have lost their faith in the police.
Ganguly further alleged the TMC of pressurising the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to not carry out the probes fairly. He said, “The SIT is never successful in the investigations because TMC is pressurising them to not do the investigation properly. In most of the cases, the TMC panchayat member, the municipality councillor and local leaders are involved. They exploit the people on party orders. It is said that the SIT is investigating but in actuality they do nothing and the people have understood it now.”
The move came after a nine-member delegation of BJP MPs from West Bengal met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought his intervention and action against the perpetrators involved in the crime.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe of the Birbhum violence case following the Calcutta High Court order.
The victim’s family has accused the son of a Trinamool Congress panchayat leader in the case. Calcutta High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the Hanskhali rape case. |

| Oil Prices Tumble 5PC On Global Commodities Selloff After IMF Lowers Growth Forecasts Posted: 19 Apr 2022 09:26 PM PDT Crude oil prices fell 5 per cent Tuesday amid a selloff in global commodity markets after the International Monetary Fund slashed its world growth forecasts for 2022 and 2023, citing runaway fuel and food costs and other challenges from the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Brent, the London-traded global benchmark for crude, settled down $5.91, or 5.2 per cent, at $107.25 per barrel. It plunged more than $6 earlier, hitting a session low of $106.81. New York-traded West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, the benchmark for US crude, settled down $5.65, or 5.2 per cent, at $102.56. The intraday low for WTI was $101.55. Both crude benchmarks had gained about 15% over four previous days of trading as oil markets rallied on expectations of a further supply squeeze from Western sanctions imposed on Russia. “With so much volatility in intraday oil prices, and extreme reactions to headline risks … I continue to expect that Brent will remain in a choppy $100 to $120 range, with WTI in a $95 to $115 range,” Jeffrey Halley, head of research for Australia and Asia-Pacific at online trading platform OANDA, said. The International Energy Agency has warned that roughly 3 million barrels daily of Russian oil could be shut in from May onward due to sanctions, or buyers voluntarily shunning Russian cargoes. Russian oil output has continued to slide in April, declining by 7.5 per cent in the first half of the month from March, the Interfax news agency reported on Friday. World gross domestic product, or GDP, will likely expand by only 3.6% this year and next, the IMF said in an update of its World Economic Outlook published on Tuesday. That represented a downgrade of 0.8 percentage point and 0.2 percentage point, respectively, from the IMF’s previous GDP outlook published in December. While the IMF revised down its GDP outlook, it raised its inflation expectations to an average of 5.7 per cent this year across advanced economies, and 8.7 per cent for emerging economies, citing inflation and other challenges from the Russia-Ukraine crisis. That was 1.8 points and 2.8 points higher, respectively, from the IMF’s previous inflation forecast. “Economic damage from the conflict will contribute to a significant slowdown in global growth in 2022 and add to inflation,” the IMF said. “Fuel and food prices have increased rapidly, hitting vulnerable populations in low-income countries hardest.” After slashing rates to nearly zero at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, the US central bank approved its first pandemic-era rate hike on March 16, raising rates by 25 basis points, or a quarter point. Many Federal Reserve officials have concluded since that the hike was too tame to rein in inflation galloping at 40-year highs. The central bank is considering as many as seven rate adjustments this year and continuing them through 2023 until inflation drops to its target of 2% a year, from a current 8%. While most Federal Reserve officials are considering up to half point rate increases a month, James Bullard, the central bank’s head for its St. Louis division, has suggested a maximum three-quarter point increase to expedite the fight against inflation. Bullard’s comments were one reason for Tuesday’s selloff in commodities, with gold dropping more than 1 per cent, copper 2 per cent and natural gas nearly 10 per cent after dollar, which determines pricing for most raw materials, hit two-year highs, impacting international demand for goods. |

| No Innocent Person Should Be Booked In Jahangirpuri Violence: National Minorities Panel Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:51 PM PDT A National Commission for Minorities delegation led by chairperson Iqbal Singh Lalpura visited Delhi’s Jahangirpuri where clashes erupted between members of two groups and called upon the administration to ensure that no innocent person is booked in the matter. The delegation also requested the administration to “quickly” nab the culprits of the violence. A clash between two groups erupted during a religious procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on April 16 that left nine people injured including eight police personnel and a civilian. Appreciating the role of the district administration in containing the rising tension between the two communities, the Commission advised them to quickly nab all the culprits and take necessary steps so such incidents do not happen in future. The delegation took stock of the situation from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) North West. As per the statement of the National Commission for Minorities, the delegation was informed that “the third procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti which did not have the permission was being organised by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP)/Bajrang Dal.” There was a minor scuffle between two groups which later turned violent and police immediately rushed to the spot and controlled the situation, the statement said. The Commission also had a joint meeting with representatives of both the communities and advised them to conduct Aman Committee meetings regularly. On Tuesday, Delhi Police said that the situation in Jahangirpuri was peaceful and talks are being held with the Aman committee. “The situation is peaceful. Talks were held with Aman Committee. The investigation is taking place in a fair manner,” Delhi Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dependra Pathak said. A total of 23 people have been arrested and two juveniles apprehended so far in connection with the incident. National Security Act (NSA) was imposed against five culprits involved in the clashes that took place in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri that erupted between members of two groups during a Hanuman Jayanti procession. Meanwhile, in wake of the incident, the Delhi police are conducting drone surveillance to keep a vigil over the Central District. |
| Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:41 PM PDT Officials from the United States, Australia, Japan and New Zealand on Tuesday (local time) expressed concerns about a proposed security framework between the Solomon Islands and China and its “serious risks to a free and open Indo-Pacific.” As per a White House statement, National Security Council Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink have convened a meeting in Honolulu with US Navy Adm. John C Aquilino, Commander, US Indo-Pacific Command and senior officials from Australia, Japan, and New Zealand on developments in the Pacific Islands on April 18. “In Honolulu, the officials reaffirmed the four countries’ enduring and shared commitment to the Pacific Islands,” a white House statement said. According to the statement, the US resolved to intensify its engagement in the region to meet 21st-century challenges, from maritime security and economic development to the climate crisis and COVID-19. “We will do this in ever-closer partnership with Pacific Island nations, including through a united Pacific Islands Forum; and together with like-minded countries, within and beyond the region, including in Europe,” the statement read further. “Officials from the four countries represented also shared concerns about a proposed security framework between the Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and its serious risks to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” it added. The meeting was part of regular and extensive US consultations with allies and partners on the Indo-Pacific and is part of the announced senior administration travel this week to Hawaii, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. China and Solomon Islands on Tuesday (Beijing time) signed a framework agreement on security cooperation that neighbours of the South Pacific archipelago fear could open the door to a Chinese naval base in the country. Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that the two countries had formally signed a framework pact on security cooperation. Australia said that China has intentions to build a naval base in the Solomon Islands to intimidate the continent. The United States last week expressed concern over the security pact between China and the Solomon Islands, saying this agreement will open the door for the deployment of Chinese military forces to the Pacific nation. “We believe that signing such an agreement could actually increase destabilisation within the Solomon Islands and could set a concerning precedent for the wider Pacific Island region,” Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby told a press briefing. |
| US Preparing To Announce Another Military Aid Package For Ukraine Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:31 PM PDT The United States is expected to announce that it will provide a new military aid package to Ukraine this week for the ongoing war between Moscow and Kyiv, Sputnik News Agency reported citing US media on Tuesday (local time). The new package will be similar in size to the latest one worth USD 800 million and will include both more artillery and tens of thousands of artillery rounds, the report said, citing Biden administration officials. Earlier, US President Joe Biden had said that his administration will provide Ukraine with an additional 800 million US dollars’ worth of military aid including heavy artillery as Washington anticipated a “wider assault” by Russia in eastern Ukraine. “The United States will continue to provide Ukraine with the capabilities to defend itself,” Biden said in a statement after a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “Will contain many of the highly effective weapons systems we have already provided and new capabilities tailored to the wider assault we expect Russia to launch in eastern Ukraine,” Biden had said. “These new capabilities include artillery systems, artillery rounds and armored personnel carriers. I have also approved the transfer of additional helicopters,” he said, adding that the United States will continue to facilitate the transfer of significant capabilities from its allies and partners around the world. The United States has committed 1.7 billion dollars in security assistance to Ukraine since Russia began its “special military operation”. However, White House on Monday (local time) said that President Biden has no plans to visit Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “There are no plans for the President to go,” White House spokesperson Jen Psaki has said. She also has informed that Washington has sent four planes loaded with security assistance to Ukraine over the weekend and made one more delivery on Monday. Washington has committed more than USD 3.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. Approximately USD 2.6 billion of the total amount was approved since the beginning of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine at the end on February, according to the Defense Department. On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine after the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk requested help to defend them from intensifying attacks by Ukrainian troops. |

| India Among Countries To Have Fulfilled Most Paris Commitments, Says Sitharaman Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:15 PM PDT Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said India is one of the six countries to have fulfilled most of the commitments made at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 and remains committed to fulfilling its renewable energy targets. Sitharaman made the remarks while answering a question during a panel discussion at the Atlantic Council, a US-based think tank. “We are one of the six countries who have fulfilled most of the commitments made in Paris,” Sitharaman said. “One calculation we had in our mind was the transition would be filled with natural gas, that the transition will be enabled by natural gas. But unfortunately, what has happened, because of the recent developments is not only that the crude, a fossil fuel from which we want to move out, has shot up, (but) natural gas, which is a transition fuel we wanted even that’s gone up and it’s also in short supply,” she added. She was asked if India’s commitment to its environmental goals has changed in light of recent geopolitical disturbances as a result of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. “So when the price of such a fuel which is a transition fuel goes skyrocketing, your calculations get upset,” Sitharaman said. Talking about India’s transition from coal, Sitharaman said that given the recent developments, the timeline of India reducing its dependence on coal will be “challenged”. “So your dependence on coal will ideally be coming down and if we pegged the coming down to a certain period, now because of the transition gas becoming much more in price and availability becoming a bit difficult, the dependence on coal and the speed with which we wanted to get out of it will be challenged… so that’s what is the big problem before us,” Sitharaman said. Talking about India’s future commitments, Sitharaman made it clear that India’s commitment to achieving its environmental goals remains even as the timeline under which the transition would take place would have to be “relooked”. “Our commitments will be fulfilled as regards renewable energy… our commitments to refashion our energy basket remains intact, but I suppose the time that it’s going to take (will) probably have to be relooked. However, the commitments made by our PM in COP26 in Scotland is something we have taken seriously, and we are moving forward to fulfilling it,” she said. Sitharaman talked about the Indian economy, the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the welfare schemes of the government and India’s recovery plan from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic during the almost an hour-long session. Sitharaman is in Washington on an official visit to attend the Spring Meetings at the World Bank, the G20 Finance Ministers meeting and the Central Bank Governor Meeting (FMCBG). The visit will also include several bilateral interactions, including with Indonesia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and South Africa as well as a high-level meeting with World Bank President David Malpass. |

NSA has been imposed against Ansar, Salim, Imam Sheikh alias Sonu, Dilshad and Ahir for their involvement in the Jahangirpuri violence, officials said. The action was taken a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana to take strict action over Jahangirpuri violence. Shah had given his direction in a telephonic conversation with Asthana followed by a report presented before him by senior Delhi Police officials on the incident. The situation turned tense in the north-west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri soon after stone-pelting and chaos ensued following clashes between members of two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in the evening. The FIR, registered on the complaint filed by a police officer at the Jahangirpuri police station, mentions that there was a peaceful Shobha Yatra procession to mark Hanuman Jayanti and an argument escalated. It led to stone-pelting. Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Monday informed in a press briefing that 14 teams of police are investigating the Jahangirpuri violence case. The Delhi Police Commissioner said that a close watch was being maintained on the social media platforms and assured legal action against those attempting to spread misinformation. Four teams of forensics examined the spot today. 14 teams of police are investigating the case from different angles. The investigation is in the initial phase. A total of 21 people were arrested and some others are on remand,” Asthana told ANI on Monday. “We are monitoring social media closely, and legal action will be taken against those who are found spreading misinformation,” Asthana said when asked about reports that flags were installed at a mosque. Three firearms and five swords have been recovered from the possession of the accused persons, said police. “As of now, three firearms recovered. A forensic examination will be done on the recovery. Restrictions in the Jahangirpuri area were imposed to create a sense of safety. The police deployment will be decreased after the situation gets better,” the Delhi CP said. On the violent clashes, the Delhi top cop said, “An altercation between the two groups erupted, now what was the altercation and why it happened, saying anything on this before concluding the investigation will not be right.” On Monday, Ravindra Yadav, Special Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch informed that the Delhi Police Crime Branch and the district police are jointly probing the incident. |

| Shanghai Uproar Amidst Lockdown, Treatment Delays Posted: 19 Apr 2022 07:37 AM PDT Beijing [China]: Shanghai is facing major uproar, amidst high number of new cases being reported on a daily basis. Shanghai reported a new high of 21,000 new cases of COVID testing on 8th April, as the city’s 26 million inhabitants remained under lockdown and other Chinese cities increased restrictions- even in regions where no fresh infections have occurred.
The megacity is struggling to suppress the Omicron, as well as rising public dissatisfaction with quarantine policies. People with long-term conditions or who require extensive care are going without treatment as a result of the government’s stringent stance on regulating the coronavirus. Recently, a popular article on Chinese social media documented the death of a lady at a Shanghai rehabilitation centre. The patient named Li Chang is a Tsinghua University alumnus and mother of two who required 24-hour care after suffering a brain haemorrhage last year. Her care staff was compelled to quarantine in late March, as per social media posts, after several people at the institution tested positive for COVID-19. Her friends and family were forbidden from responding to her needs, and she died just a few days later. In a now-deleted piece on her WeChat site, Xu Liyuan, a writer and former journalist, lamented Li Chang’s death. Xu subsequently stated that she removed the post because Li’s family requested not to publish about their relative’s death.
An article about cancer sufferers in Shanghai was also published on Dxy.cn, an online medical information site that gained a lot of traction. COVID-19 is one of the hundreds of fatal illnesses that exist in the world. People across the social media network are pleading with the administration to enable all patients to get the same critically needed, medical care.
Several individuals have died because of the virus, counting both symptomatic and asymptomatic instances. As per the post “Lockdown Enthusiasts” are so fond of using the preservation of people’s lives to defend the policy, the post even taunted and questioned these people for a definite number of persons who died during the latest wave.
A Shanghai East Hospital nurse died of an asthma attack three weeks ago after being refused treatment at her own hospital. Thousands of outraged comments flooded the internet in response to the report. Caixin, one of the few Chinese news sites to cover the event, had its piece removed after it was published. A story alleging terrible working conditions for substitute orderlies at Shanghai’s Donghai Elderly Care Hospital was also published by Sixth Tone but then subsequently removed.
Another now-deleted WeChat blog post claimed that a doctor in Heilongjiang Province committed suicide after being penalised for doing surgery on a patient who was COVID-19 positive without his knowledge.
The author claims that the patient in question used her nucleic acid test results, which were negative at the time; that Dr Shi was a well-respected surgeon who was vital to his hospital’s neurosurgery department; and that news of his suicide has been heavily censored on the Chinese social media and the internet.
Two additional stories about Shanghai lockdowns have stirred outrage, each for different reasons.
The controversy over the medically legitimate operation took place on March 2nd before the worst of the Omicron crisis hit the country. The hospital’s message after the surgery also appears to be part of a typical social media promotion of the work of its different medical divisions, of which the urology unit is just one.
