Rahmanullah will be serving as a replacement for the England batter Jason Roy, who had earlier pulled out of the tournament. “Whilst it is disappointing that Jason will not be a part of our campaign this year, we are mindful of the health and well-being of players in these times. We wish Jason well and look forward to his return to the field. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is one of the promising young batters to emerge from Afghanistan and we believe he is an ideal replacement for Jason,” Vikram Solanki, Director of Cricket, Gujarat Titans said in a statement. “Gurbaz is an attacking batter and fits into our plans for the Gujarat Titans. He has given a good account of his talent in international cricket and a few tournaments around the globe,” he added. A right-handed batter and a wicketkeeper, Gurbaz had represented Afghanistan in 2018 under-19 World Cup. Since making his senior international debut in 2019, he has played nine One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 20 T20 Internationals so far. In 2021, Gurbaz became the first Afghan batter to score a century on ODI debut – a feat he achieved against Ireland at Abu Dhabi. | Lasith Malinga joins Rajasthan Royals as fast bowling coach Posted: 11 Mar 2022 06:00 AM PST Rajasthan Royals have announced two additions to their coaching staff ahead of the much anticipated IPL 2022 season. The franchise has welcomed Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga as their new fast bowling coach and has also onboarded Paddy Upton in a new role of Team Catalyst. The 38-year-old T20 World Cup-winning captain Malinga, who led his country to the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup trophy, will be working during the upcoming season with the talented group of pacers present within the Royals’ set-up. Renowned as one of the best limited overs bowlers ever, Malinga will oversee the preparation of bowling strategies in the build-up and during the season, while also accelerating the development of the young bowlers by imparting his knowledge and expertise of T20 cricket. During a career that spanned over 17 years, the right-arm fast bowler represented Sri Lanka in 340 matches across the three formats and picked up 546 wickets. In the Indian Premier League, he only represented one team – Mumbai Indians – for whom he grabbed 170 scalps in 122 matches. Most recently in February 2022, he served as Sri Lanka’s Bowling Strategy Coach for their T20I series against Australia. Speaking on his appointment, Malinga said, “It’s a wonderful feeling for me to return to the IPL and an absolute honour to join Rajasthan Royals, a franchise that has always promoted and developed young talent. I am excited by the pace bowling unit we have going into the tournament and looking forward to supporting all the fast bowlers with the execution of their game plans and their overall development. I’ve made some very special memories in the IPL with Mumbai Indians and now with Royals, looking forward to new experiences and creating great memories in this journey.” On the other hand, the appointment of Paddy Upton marks a return to the Royals for the South African, who has previously worked as the Head Coach of the franchise from 2013-15 and then in 2019, having led the team to top-four finishes in 2013 and 2015, along with a place in the Champions League in 2013. Being the Team Catalyst, Upton will play a crucial role in establishing team integration by bringing them together as a cohesive and mutually supporting unit and looking after their mental well-being with the use of various mental conditioning processes and activities that aid in maintaining a healthy culture and environment, especially within the restrictions of being in a bio-bubble. Upton will himself be a part of the bubble for the initial four weeks of the tournament while supporting virtually post the completion of this period. The South African has previously also worked as the Mental Conditioning Coach for India Men’s Team during the successful 2011 ICC World Cup, and as the Performance Director of South Africa Cricket from 2011-2014, guiding South Africa to become the first cricket team to hold the World No.1 ranking in all three formats of the game in 2012. Meanwhile, like last season, Kumar Sangakkara will be assuming the role of Head Coach during the upcoming season, while being the Director of Cricket at the Royals outside of the season. He welcomed the two new additions, “Lasith is arguably one of the greatest T20 fast bowlers of all time, and to have a personality like his around the training ground, and the expertise he brings to the table is certainly something we feel the team can benefit from. We have some of the best fast bowlers in our squad and we are delighted that they will have the chance to work with Lasith and get to learn and develop further.” “It’s the same with Paddy, who has been a great servant for the Royals and has done an exceptional job in building that cohesion between players and also conditioning them mentally. We believe he will act as a great addition to our coaching staff. I am also excited to keep working with this new team in my dual role as Head Coach during the season and Director of Cricket round the year, and hope that all our efforts can contribute towards achieving our objective of winning the IPL,” Kumar added. |

| Mamata Banerjee calls for Opposition unity to fight 2024 LS polls, says ‘Congress lost credibility’ Posted: 11 Mar 2022 04:55 AM PST Following the results of Assembly polls in five states, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said Congress has lost its credibility and the Opposition parties cannot bank on Congress to fight Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2024 general elections. Breifing to mediapersons, the chief minister said, “All political polities that want to fight BJP should walk together. Congress is losing its credibility. We cannot depend on Congress. If Congress wants we all can fight (2024 general elections) together. Do not be aggressive for now, be positive. This winning (Assembly polls in 4 states) will be a big loss for BJP. Their saying that 2022 election results will decide the fate of 2024 polls is impractical.” Banerjee’s remarks came against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying on Thursday that the election verdict of four states decided the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. “When we formed government in 2019 (at Centre), ‘experts’ said it was because of the 2017 victory (in Uttar Pradesh)… I believe the same ‘experts’ will say that the 2022 election result will decide the fate of 2024 national elections,” PM Modi said while addressing party workers from the BJP headquarters in Delhi. On Trinamool Congress (TMC) failed to open its account in Goa assembly polls, Banerjee said, “TMC got 6 per cent votes in Goa within three months of the party’s launch there. It is enough”. The TMC supremo alleged malpractices of electronic voting machines (EVM) in Uttar Pradesh and said BJP’s victory is not a populist result but of election machinery. Mamata Banerjee’s remarks came a day after the results of assembly polls in five states where BJP showcased its electoral prowess by retaining four states. The party set new records by winning Uttar Pradesh for a second consecutive term. Further, it also managed to hold power in Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The results of five assembly polls came as a shock to the Congress which was hoping to do well to revive its prospects for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and to fend off the emerging challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Trinamool Congress to replace it as the fulcrum of anti-BJP politics in the country. |

Last year, the CBSE had announced that board examinations for 2022 will be conducted in two terms. While Term-I exams have already been held, the Term-II exams for both the classes will commence from April 26. This time exam timings will be 10:30 am and won’t be conducted in two shifts. Further details are available on the official website, stated the CBSE. According to the Board, the exam schedule has been prepared keeping the COVID-19 pandemic in mind. “As the schools were closed due to the pandemic which has led to learning loss, therefore, more gaps have been given between the examinations in almost all the subjects in both the classes,” said the CBSE in a notification issued today. He said that the UN’s Refugee Agency needs about USD 500 million for its emergency work in Ukraine and neighboring countries adding that so far it has received over USD 300 million of which almost USD 200 million is from individuals, companies, and foundations. Calling the war senseless, Grandi in a tweet wrote, “the number of refugees from Ukraine — tragically — has reached today 2.5 million. Millions forced to leave their homes by this senseless war.” Last Sunday, UN refugee agency commissioner Filippo Grandi said more than 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine had crossed into neighboring countries in 10 days, describing the situation as “the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.” European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell earlier said the European Union should be ready for five million people fleeing Ukraine amid ongoing conflict with Russia. | Posted: 11 Mar 2022 02:33 AM PST Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday took a dig at the Congress for blaming him for the party’s defeat in the recent Punjab assembly elections. “The Congress Leadership will never learn! Who is responsible for the humiliating defeat of Congress in UP? What about Manipur, Goa, Uttrakhand? The answer is written in BOLD LETTERS on the wall but as always I presume they will avoid reading it.” Amarinder Singh tweeted. Singh who had had late last year launched his own party Punjab Lok Congress lost his Patiala Urban Constituency seat and ally BJP could manage to win only two seats out of the total 117 assembly seats in the state as per the results of the assembly polls announced yesterday. Congress’ Randeep Singh Surjewala had claimed that the Congress party had lost because of the anti-incumbency of 4.5 years under Captain Amarinder Singh. “In Punjab, Congres presented a new leadership through Charanjit Singh Channi who is the son of the soil, but the entire anti-incumbency of 4.5 years under Captain Amarinder Singh could not be overcome and hence people voted for AAP for change,” said Surjewala said while addressing a press conference yesterday. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), registered a historic win in Punjab with a three-fourth majority while in the other four states- Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, and Uttarakhand, the BJP is set to form the government. |

| Xi Jinping ‘unsettled’ by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, says CIA Director Posted: 10 Mar 2022 10:23 PM PST CIA Director William J. Burns hinted at a potentially tenuous China-Russia relationship in the wake of Moscow’s increasingly brutal tactics against Ukraine, with Burns telling the Senate Intelligence Committee that Chinese leader Xi Jinping is “unsettled”. “The Chinese leadership, first, has invested a lot in partnership with Russia, and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon,” Burns said during the Senate Intelligence Committee’s annual worldwide threats hearing. “I do however believe that the Chinese leadership, President Xi in particular, is unsettled by what he’s seeing, partly because his own intelligence doesn’t appear to have told him what was going to happen.” Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a 5,000-word joint statement ahead of the Winter Olympics last month outlining how the two nations approached different issues, with the statement released following a meeting of the leaders in Beijing. The New York Times reported last week that Chinese officials asked the Russian government to hold off on invading Ukraine until the end of the Winter Olympics. “What has unfolded in Ukraine, the ugliness of it, the flawed assumptions that underpinned it from the point of view of President Putin, have unsettled the Chinese leadership a little bit, they are unsettled by the reputational damage that could come from that,” Burns said. The CIA Director also said the Russian President may be overestimating to the extent that Chinese leadership will be able or willing to help him deal with severe economic consequences of military action in Ukraine. “It remains to be seen how it will play out,” he added. “We assess that Russia does not want a direct conflict with U.S. forces. Russia seeks an accommodation with the United States on mutual non-interference in both countries’ domestic affairs and U.S. recognition of Russia’s claimed sphere of influence over much of the former Soviet Union,” the report added. It further stated that Russia’s officials have long believed that the United States is trying to undermine Russia, weaken Putin, and install Western-friendly regimes in the former Soviet states and elsewhere, which they conclude gives Russia leeway to retaliate. |
