PM chairs high level meeting on Ukraine crisis

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 09:20 AM PST

New Delhi [India]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on the Ukraine crisis on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary of India Harsh Vardhan Shringla and other officials.

Over 13,300 people have returned to India so far under Operation Ganga from crisis-ridden Ukraine.

Tensions escalated following Russia’s military action against Ukraine. The External Affairs Ministry on Saturday said that almost all Indians have left Kharkiv city in Ukraine and the main focus of the government is to evacuate citizens from the Sumy area. Evacuation has been especially challenging in these areas owing to the ongoing violence and lack of transportation.

The government has also deployed GOI ministers as ‘special envoys’ to four neighbouring countries bordering Ukraine to coordinate and oversee the evacuation process of Indian nationals.

Russian forces launched military operations in Ukraine on February 24, three days after Moscow recognised Ukraine’s breakaway regions – Donetsk and Luhansk – as independent entities.

Record tourists in J&K this year

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 09:02 AM PST

Gulmarg (Jammu and Kashmir): The Chinar Corps unit of the Indian Army on Saturday informed that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a record footfall of tourists this year, adding that there has been a significant reduction in incidents of stone-pelting, protests or bandhs in the UT.

Haling the progress of development in the Union Territory, Chinar Corps’ Lieutenant General DP Pandey said today, “A record number of tourists came here last year. There has been a reduction in stone-pelting, protests or bandhs.

Terrorist recruitment has come down. Youth have realised that they make them fools by providing them guns.”

Previously, on December 30, 2021, Pandey said that the infiltration attempts from the other side of the border into Jammu and Kashmir have gone down this year, adding that terror groups are trying to recruit young children aged 15-16 years.

“The infiltration attempts are not serious as of now. The numbers have gone down this year. We are vigilant and totally prepared to ensure that no one is able to sneak in,” said Pandey.

Manipur Polls: 76.62% voting till 5PM. Re-poll likely at some polling stations

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:55 AM PST

Imphal (Manipur): As voting ended in the second and final phase of the Manipur Assembly elections on Saturday, Chief Electoral Officer of the state Rajesh Agrawal said that the polling stations at which the EVMs’ data could not be retrieved following poll-violence incidents have chances to undergo a re-poll.

Speaking on the matter Agrawal said, “In the hills also, out of 11 Assembly constituencies, poll-related incidents of EVM smashing were restricted to 5 Assembly constituencies. Whereas all together of 12 EVMs were disrupted, some of which we could restore and restart the polling, in some cases, the EVMs were destroyed beyond the retrieval of data. So maybe, we will examine the records and see what decision has to be taken for those polling stations.”

“Where the EVM data cannot be retrieved, definitely we will have to order some re-poll. So there are chances of some re-polls at least,” the CEO added.

Speaking further about the poll violence registered during the second phase of polling today, Agrawal said that one person succumbed to the injuries that he suffered in the incident while another person is undergoing treatment in Imphal.

Informing about the poll percentage registered today, the CEO said that Manipur may register a total of nearly 85 per cent as per the trend that the state follows.

“Largely the second phase of the polling has also been very peaceful. Till 5 pm, a total percentage of 76.62 per cent of the poll has been reported.

The final data will be out only after all the polling parties come back. As per the trend that Manipur has maintained of polling around 85 per cent in every election. I think phase two will be nothing different,” he said.

The counting of the votes will take place on March 10.

Russia lauds India’s independent foreign policy

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:44 AM PST

New Delhi [India]: Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov said that Moscow has welcomed the independent foreign policy of India, strengthening of its role as well as its influence in the international arena.

Touching upon the relations with India, Alipov said, “Prime Minister and the Indian leadership meet the consistent independent policy of the state in international affairs. We have repeatedly stated that we have welcomed the independent foreign policy of India and strengthening of its role and its influence in the international arena. We never put any pressure on India and do not set any conditions. The Indians are now under severe pressure from the United States. I think this is a wrong and useless way.”

The Russian envoy hailed the Indian foreign policy stand on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Commenting on India-Russia ties, Alipov says, “India’s interests are in the first place. The interest of the two countries is of strategic nature. Our relations are developing in the interest of two countries.”

On the issue of financial ties between both the countries, the envoy said “There is a working bilateral mechanism for mutual settlements in national currencies. Then there will be no obstacles in this area as well. From this side, it also makes sense for India to take a closer look for cooperation with Russia.”

Talking about the evacuation of Indians from Ukraine and Russia’s cooperation on the same, Alipov said, the task is to provide conditions for the safe evacuation of Indians through the territory of the Russian Federation.

“The main focus is on the Indians who remain in Ukraine mostly in the North-Eastern regions for example in the city of Kharkiv. There are now 3000 students there. Not far from Kharkiv in the city of Pisochyn there are about 900 people and in the city of Sumy there are 670 people,” he added.

Assuring help from Russia for the safe evacuation of Indians, Alipov reiterated, “The Indians turn to us for help and we responded. We created special groups that are ready to take Indians to the territory of the Russian Federation and transport them to India.”

Raising several issues of concern in the conflict-ridden areas, Alipov remarked, “But the catch is that the fighting in these areas continues and where the Indians are, our forces are not. There is no way to pick them up in some places that are under fire from Ukraine.”

He assured that it will be possible to safely transport to Russian territory and for that Russia provided hundreds of buses which are now waiting to take the Indians out adding that special groups of soldiers have been sent.

“The border services, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were involved. Groups of diplomats have been sent to Belgorod from the Indian Embassy to deal with this issue on the spot in coordinate actions from the Russian side,” he said, adding, “Our buses are close to these places but not there…. but we have to ensure safe passage of the Indians towards the convoys that are waiting for their arrival. There are no deadlines and we will wait as long as it takes.”

Replying to a question on attacks on Indians on the Ukrainian-Polish border, Alipov said, “There is a confusion that remains as there is a large influx of refugees.”
Russian forces launched military operations in Ukraine on February 24, three days after Moscow recognised Ukraine’s breakaway regions – Donetsk and Luhansk – as independent entities.

This International Women’s Day take a look at careers that #breakthebias

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:38 AM PST

As this International Women’s Day centres around the theme of #breakthebias, let’s take a look at some careers in which people are breaking the traditional roots of stereotyping genders associated with those professions.

  1. Firefighter
When we think of a firefighter, we think of a man. Similar is the case with other gender-stereotyped jobs. Firefighting is often thought of as a man’s job, especially due to the life-threatening risk involved with the job.

However, many women are stepping into this “man’s job” and proving that they too possess the capabilities and skillsets to pursue and ace this job.

Harshini Kanhekar, the first woman firefighter in India, is an inspiration for many. She applied to the Fire engineering course in 2002 and became the first woman to have got admission to the National Fire Service College in Nagpur at the age of 26.

Another remarkable and inspiring woman in the field is Taniya Sanyal, the first woman firefighter to be appointed by the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Until 2018, AAI recruited only men as its firefighters, but after the rules were relaxed, Sanyal emerged as the strong woman candidate to enter the male-dominated field.

  1. Nurse
Nursing remains stereotyped as a female occupation as the role of a nurse is to be a caregiver. This misunderstood representation takes away the idea that men can also provide care. The men who choose nursing as a career face challenges as these traditional female jobs are perceived by society as a step down in their status.

It is worth noting that nurses are usually referred to with feminine job titles such as sister and matron, without any popular term for the men in the profession.

The taboo around men pursuing the profession of nursing has also been portrayed from a humourous angle through Abhishek Bachchan’s character in the film ‘Dostana’ (2008). While the film did not stress it, representation through art plays a big role in normalisation and acceptance of the path-breaking choices in our society.

  1. Bus Driver
The bus industry in India is predominately filled with men as it is mostly believed that women cannot drive buses as they are heavy and difficult to handle.

However, slowly and steadily, more and more women are taking over the steering. It was in 2015 that the Delhi Transport Corporation hired its first female bus driver, Venkadarath Saritha.

Recently, in February 2022, the Delhi government has relaxed the experience criteria for the recruitment of women bus drivers in the city. The women who are applying for driving posts now do not need any prior experience.

  1. Preschool and Kindergarten Teacher
While the teaching profession is predominantly female, this is particularly true for preschool and kindergarten teachers. In most cases, the male teachers are usually PT trainers, music or maths teachers.

Many schools also have a strict ‘no male kindergarten teacher policy’. When young children see men sing nursery rhymes, read stories or draw pictures, they will realise teaching is a gender-neutral profession.

The lack of male teachers for younger children also increases the chance of them missing out on a male role model to look upto.

  1. Wedding Preists and Qazis
While female priests in weddings are still a rare sight, a growing number of couples are opting for female priests. The women priests also often filter and modify the hymns in a way that they do not make the bride sound like a commodity.

In February 2021, actor Dia Mirza made headlines for choosing a woman priest, Sheela Atta, for conducting her marriage ceremony with businessman Vaibhav Rekhi. The actor also tweeted a shout-out to her priest, writing, “Thank you, Sheela Atta, for conducting our wedding ceremony. So proud that together we can #RiseUp. #GenerationEquality.”

Similarly, there is nothing in Islam that stops a woman from performing a nikah. But the practice is uncommon. Still, there are couples who have chosen to have their nikah solemnised by a woman qazi.

  1. Stay-at-home Parent
Quitting a full-time job to be at home and look after the kids is probably one of the biggest career moves for any parent, especially a father. While most women are societally fed the expectation to give up their career once they become mothers, the same is hardly ever implied for the bread-winning father.

Housewife, the term for a stay-at-home married woman, is extremely common in the Indian vocabulary. On the other hand, one would need to think about what title to refer a man with, who stays at home by choice.

Unfortunately, men who decide to become stay-at-home dads are shamed by society for quitting their jobs to look after their baby, while their wife wants to go to her office.

Bollywood film’s like ‘Ki & Ka’ and ‘Chachi 420’ have attempted to portray the hero as a man who chooses to unfollow traditional manhood, whether it is by staying-at-home and taking care of housework as seen in the former or perfectly taking care of one’s child as seen in the latter.

It is worth noting that when women challenge gender stereotypes, they are often stigmatised as going for something challenging, while when the men step into feminine-seeming jobs, they are mostly looked down on as undermining their skills or masculinity.

The societal paradigms around gender bias can be modified when more and more people will opt for careers traditionally dominated by the opposite gender. This will aid in creating a more inclusive and gender-neutral society.

The government has also deployed ‘special envoys’ to four neighbouring countries bordering Ukraine to coordinate and oversee the evacuation process of Indian nationals.

Over 10,000 US troops deployed in Poland- US Secretary of State Blinken

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:30 AM PST

Brussels [Belgium]: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Saturday praised Warsaw for playing a “vital” role in the Ukraine crisis, by stating that the United States has deployed doubled the number of military personnel in Poland.

In a meeting with the Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau, Blinken expressed the United States’ admiration and appreciation for Poland’s solidarity and support for Ukraine.

“Poland is doing vital work to respond to this (Ukraine) crisis. It has done a great deal to facilitate security assistance to Ukraine. Since January 30, the US has more than doubled the number of military personnel deployed in Poland to now more than 10,000,” Blinken said today.

Speaking about the humanitarian crisis, Poland Foreign Minister said: “Everything possible must be done to ensure evacuation. Russia’s aggression in Ukraine causes a humanitarian crisis of an unimaginable scale. Our priority is organising effective aid for millions of refugees. Poland has already received up to 700,000 refugees.”

Earlier Blinken met with Charles Michel, President of the European Council in Brussels as the two discussed their “support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Taking to Twitter, Blinken said, “Good meeting with @EU_Commission President @vonderleyen in Brussels. The United States and the EU are united in our support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and against Russia’s unjustifiable war.”

“As I leave Brussels this morning, we are united with @NATO, the EU, and our European Allies and partners in our support for Ukraine’s democratically elected President Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian government, and, most of all, the brave people of Ukraine,” he added.
Moreover, Blinken on Wednesday said the United States, in coordination with its allies and partners, is imposing additional economic costs on Russia and Belarus in response to military operations against Ukraine.

Ukraine president trying to provoke conflict between Russia & NATO- Russian Foreign Minister

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:22 AM PST

Moscow [Russia]: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Volodymyr Zelenskyy is trying to provoke a conflict between Russia and NATO.

“I have a question. If he (Zelenskyy) is so upset that NATO did not step up for him as he hoped, it means that he did hope for the conflict’s resolution though the involvement of NATO in this whole affair, rather than by negotiating,” Lavrov told a briefing.

“So it turns out that he doesn’t hear the constant assertions coming from Washington, Paris, Berlin and other capitals that NATO is not going to intervene in this conflict. And it turns out that he is seeking to provoke a conflict involving NATO, between NATO and Russia,” the minister added.

Earlier, Russian forces had said it will stop firing at 10 am Moscow time to allow humanitarian corridors out of the Ukrainian cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha, Russia’s defence ministry said, Interfax reported.

But the city officials noted that due to the fact that Russian side did not adhere to the ceasefire and continued shelling both of Mariupol itself and its environs and for security reasons, the evacuation of the civilian population has been postponed.”

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:19 AM PST

Ravindra Jadeja scored an unbeaten 175 as India declared their first innings at 574/8 against Sri Lanka on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test before scalping three wickets of visitors here at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Saturday.

After the stumps on Day 2, Sri Lanka’s score read 108/4 as they are trailing India by 466 runs. For Lankans Pathum Nissanka (26) and Charith Asalanka (1) are still at the crease while for hosts Jasprit Bumrah and Jadeja bagged one wicket each.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick among the bowlers for hosts as he scalped two wickets. In the 25th over, Jadeja was introduced for the first time to bowl and only in his second delivery, the all-rounder dismissed the other Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne.

Bumrah who overstepped in the 32nd over as he bowled out Pathum Nissanka was rewarded in his very next over as he trapped Angelo Mathews in front of wickets.

Ashwin soon struck again to pile more pressure on the visitors. The veteran Indian bowler trapped Dhananjaya de Silva for LBW.

Earlier in the day, hosts resumed the second session at 468/7, India lost its eighth wicket quite early as Vishwa Fernando sent Jayant Yadav (2) back to the pavilion.

Nawab Malik’s arrest ‘politically motivated – alleges NCP Chief Pawar

Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:13 AM PST

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday alleged that the arrest of Nawab Malik, the Minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, in connection with Dawood Ibrahim money laundering case is “politically motivated”.

The NCP chief further alleged that the BJP links any of his party workers belonging to the “Muslim” community with Dawood.

Notably, Malik was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the money laundering case.

“Nawab Malik’s arrest is politically motivated, he is being linked with Dawood just because he’s a Muslim,” Pawar said while addressing a press conference here.

Asked about BJP’s persistent demand for the Minister’s resignation over the matter, the NCP chief hit out at the Opposition party in the state and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should explain why his Minister Narayan Rane did not tender resignation when he was arrested.

“PM Modi should explain why Narayan Rane didn’t resign when he was arrested but BJP keeps asking for Nawab Malik’s resignation,” he said.

Notably, Rane had accused Thackeray of ignorance about the year of India’s independence at an event and said “I would have given (him) a tight slap.”

Meanwhile, the special PMLA court on Thursday extended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody of Nawab Malik till March 7 in connection with the Dawood Ibrahim money laundering case.

Earlier in February, the ED conducted raids at the residence of Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar in Mumbai in connection with the money laundering case.

Searches were carried out by the ED at several places linked to people associated with the underworld in Mumbai, informed sources said.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded the resignation of the Malik but the Maha Vikas Agadhi (MVA– comprising Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP) government has rejected the demand.
